Question about AU's in Logic...

Hi!

Question about AU's in Logic. I'm using Logic 8 Express with a M-Audio 1814, and a Roland SH-201 midi controller/keyboard on an Intel Mac running Snow Leopard. When I open the AU manager in Logic it lists my Roland SH-201's AU manager as "crashed validation". When I check the box beside it to activate it, Logic freezes (spinning coloured wheel). And although the SH-201 editor opens, it flags that it "cannot read script". The SH-201 plays the EXS24 in Logic fine, and the SH-201 standalone editor/librarian works fine as well. I feel like I'm one click away from getting this to work, any ideas would be most welcome... and thanks in advance!

Thanks!

Joseph

I'm trying to understand the purpose of the Roland's own AU manager... Is their AU manager a "virtual" version of the patches in the keyboard or something like that? It seems that using the standalone editor/librarian would be simpler to config patches on the keyboard through the computer rather than through Logic. What exactly is your end goal of getting the Roland AU manager working? What will it allow you to do, or perhaps, what are you wanting it to allow you to do?

Right off the bat, I'd make sure all your software versions are current. Double-check the drivers for the keyboard itself, and do the same for the standalone editor. If they already are, well, let's go back to my first couple questions and work this puppy out. 🙂

Thanks for the reply! I checked the versions and they were right. I had uninstalled / re-installed the SH-201 driver once already, but I thought "what the heck", and I uninstalled / re-installed BOTH the editor-librarian software AND the SH-201 driver. I did it three times, but now it works. Ghost in the machine? Who knows.

As to your questions, you're exactly right. It's a software plug-in presentation of the SH-201 synth. Configuring patches on the stand alone is easy, but the advantage of having the AU is the ability to save patches/ changes to a specific project and have those parameters called up each time the project opens. Really, I wish the plug-ins worked like any other though, because in order to make all this work, the SH-201 HAS to be your "input-output" in Logic preferences, so I can only monitor through the headphone out or 1/4" jacks (which I don't use) on the SH-201, not my M-Audio 1814 which is routed to my KRK's. This is a pain. I have to switch the "input- output" back to the 1814 in Logic AFTER recording a part in order to listen back through my monitors. I don't know if there's a work around for this, but that may be my next question at the forum if I can't find an answer.

Ah yes. Re-installs are being able to fix a great number of issues.

I could be wrong, but it sounds like the AU plugin isn't the keyboard in its entirety on the computer as a self-contained instrument, but rather a way to allow Logic to communicate directly with the keyboard via MIDI. After all, it wants you to use the keyboard as the audio device... there's got to be some kind of workaround, whether it's clever hardward routing or using Soundflower to virtually route the audio where you need it.

When you record a part, is it recording audio or just MIDI?

Maybe CCTM can help, he's quite a guru when it comes to Logic. Paging CCTM to the Help Desk!
