That's what the path I posted points to. The \ was not a typo.

That was an escape sequence to insert a space between User and Pictures. Spaces aren't allowed in paths in unix. You have to escape a space with backslash-space: "\ "

just unlock User & Groups form from the bottom left lock and drag the picture to the box, that is it

I found the original, uncropped profile picture under Macintosh HD/Users/<myusername>/Library/Containers/com.apple.ImageKit.RecentPictureServic e/Data/Library/Images/Recent Pictures

That was after viewing it in Users and Groups, though.

thank you, mspritch.. that did it for me. that's exactly where the pictures are. maybe the specific OS (mine being ML) has something to do with it(?) because none of the other methods worked for me, in this thread.

SAMEEH you are awesome!  I spent 20 minutes working through the three pages of suggestions and I found yours on the last page.  It took me less than one minute using your brilliant idea.

So, for OSX users trying to change their profile, contact, message picture here are the steps.

Open Finder and locate your dersired picture

Click on Contacts (yours will show up first)  Click Recents on the left.

                      Double click your photo.

Grab your desired photo and drag it into the box. There is room for 16 photos.

Confirm you choice and now all instances of your old photo will be replace with your new one .

    Thanks again Sameeh!

At my Mac (10.8.5) the sample user inages are located at ~/Library/User Pictures.

They are saved there in a high resolution.

You can copy them from there whereever you want.

This is exactly the answer that I was looking for.  You can't copy pictures directly from the Users/ Groups part of the system folder.  You can use a standard picture, but if you take a custom picture of yourself and want to use it somewhere else, you have to find it in the user Library.  This link has a bit of details about where it is, but the real location is toward the end where it says that the pictures for Mac Os 10.8.3 are found here - follow that path from your user Library/ Containers/ com.apple.ImageKit.RecentPictureService.  I found all the pictures that I had taken and modified.  Big Help!
