Headphone remote control not working. Any help?

Hey peeps! 🙂

I'm having problems with getting my remote control on my iPhone 3GS to work. I've tried out the headphones out on different iPhones and they work so it's not the headphone itself. I've had this problem for around 6+ months now 😟

I attempted the trick where you get a paper clip and get all the fluff out of the jack however it came to no avail. What is left for me to do? Is it a problem with my audio jack flex cable?
