New iPad camera resolution

Checking my photos, taken with the new iPad, the info-button of the iPhoto-app told me, that the resolution was only 2048 x 1530 pixels ( 3,1 MP ). Didn't Apple claim, that the new camera had a resolution of 5 MP? Does anybody out there know any details about the real resolution?
