Q: Unix maintenance tasks in Lion

Do I still need to use software like Macaroni (atomicbird.com) to ensure routine maintance tasks are run regularly?

    as far as i know yes but it sounds like a good app to run regardless just to keep junk from piling up

    It is a good app, which has kept my macs in good order for years. I can't find any information regarding conflicts with Lion. The software developers are not responding to emails.

     

    Will it continue to work with Lion or will there be problems ....

    You can see exactly when they ran by looking in Console > var/log and look at daily.out, weekly.out, monthly.out

     

    You can also use this Terminal command to see when they ran last...

    ls -al /var/log/*.out

    You can also run them all once a month if they're not doing their job. Marconi(if it's still compatible) is just a GUI front end.

     

     

    sudo periodic all

     

    These scripts are very old UNIX carry-overs that were developed for large servers running 24/7. That's why the timing is always in the wee hours, when the servers were least busy.

    Still need? You never needed that. Get rid of it.

    Basically I want to upgrade 2 old macs to Lion so I can use iCloud to stay in sync with a new machine.

    Thank you! That has been very helpful. Just knowing that the tasks will run when the machine wakes is the reassurance I needed.

     

    I shall uninstall Macaroni and do the upgrade
