Restoring iPod touch to factory settings
I am trying to restore my ipod touch to factory settings. It's 32G and about 75% full. It's been going since yesterday afternoon and I can't even turn it off. Is it normal? What do I do?

Close iTunes. Force close/terminae iTunes if necessary. Then disconnect the iPod.
Try to restore the iPod again. It may be necessary to place the iPod in recovery mode to allow a restore. For recovery mode see:
I'm sorry I forgot to mention that I am not hooked up to iTunes. I just did the restoring without the computer.

How are you doing that?
If I remember it right, I went to Settings-General-Restore-Delete All Contents & Settings, something like that.
I'm not familiar with that function. To my knowledge you must do it from the computer. However, your unit is hung up.
First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
Thanks I will try that.
I tried it, didn't work. It turned off but as soon as I turn it on it goes back to when it was trying to restore. I hooked it up to my computer turned off then it turns on as soon as I plug it and goes to restoring again which looks like the Apple logo with a running circle. Please help.
I was able to hook it up to iTunes and try to restore it but halfway to downloading the software, my iPod disappeared from Devices.
Try another USB port. Also disable your computer's security software. I would also try another cable if you have one.
you may have to get a program used by people that have jailbroken to kick it out of recovery otherwise its a never cycle. its called tinyumbrella just google it and it comes with instructions.
Great suggestion. Worked effortlessly and without the frustration of other approaches.
Also eliminated a lot of Other that was taking up too much space on my I Pod Touch
