About a week ago I started having problems with the Reading List is Safari. When I add a bookmark to the reading list it has many duplicate entries. When I delete one of them the Reading List then shows other bookmarks that were previously added to the Reading List, but they are also duplicated many times.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache. Quit then relaunch Safari.
If that didn't help, back to the menu bar, click Safari > Reset Safari.
If that didn't help, go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari, see if that worked.
Thanks for responding Carolyn. Unfortunately none of your suggestions were helpful. It's very interesting what has happened. If I save an item to the Reading List there will be two entries. If I add another link, the first one doesn't show, but the new one will have two entries. The bottom line is I can no longer see a list of all the individual entries to the Reading List.
Ok, let's try something else..
Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the Desktop.
Quit then relaunch Safari. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.
I hoped it would help, but didn't. What is interesting is that in addition to the duplicate (sometimes 3 or more entries), once I select one and then go to another item in the reading list, that one won't open. It's almost like the Reading List is corrupt. I do appreciate your suggestions.

Which Mac are you using with Safari and exactly which Mac OS X is installed and which version of Safari ??
Are you synchronizing your bookmarks with another device?

I am synchronizing with my iPhone and my wife's iPad. I am using a 24" iMac with the latest Lion update (10.7.3) as well as the latest version of Safari [Version 5.1.4 (7534.54.16)].
When the Reading List on my iMac got screwed up, my iPhone had my previous reading list that is now gone.

The synchronization is causing the problem.
Do you suggest I go to System Preferences, then iCloud and uncheck Bookmarks?
That should do it.
To be clear, I'm not saying that bookmark synching with iCloud never works. It's just not working for you, for reasons that I don't know. I know almost nothing about iCloud, because I don't use it and don't intend to use it.

Howard... Deselect the box next to Bookmarks in Sys Preferencees > iCloud then reselect the box then restart your Mac.
And... if you haven't done so, disable the Lion resume feature.
Open System Preferences > General
Deselect: Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
While waiting for your reply I unchecked Bookmarks and did the same on my iPhone. It didn't make any difference. I don't know if this helps, but when I add a bookmark to the Reading list I may see duplicates of several items I have added to the Reading List. When I select one of them, I can no longer see the other ones. When I delete the one with duplicates, the others appear. Go figure.
I'll try this later and let you know.
Um... on the iPhone you have to toggle Bookmarks off then back on, not deselect a box. It's the Bookmarks (iCloud) on your Mac that should make a difference.
