Missing hard drive space: >600GB?

I have a mid 2011 21.5" 2.7 GHZ I5 IMac with a 1 TB HDD. It is reporting that the startup disk is full (<8gb left).

I have surveyed the hard drive and found the "\users" folder is using 972GB.

The sole "user" folder (me) is using 972 GB

An exploration and sum of "folder size" of each of the underlying folders (there are 8: Audio books, Desktop, Documents, Download, Movies, Music, Picture and Public) collectively sums to 316,6GB.

The system tool in "about the iMac" (storage tab) shows "other" allocated a 893,97GB.

Where is the missing 640GB plus of space? Please can anyone advise me how to identify where space has been allocated and how to rectify the problem?

I have done the following:

  • All updates are installed
  • Verified the partition - no faults
  • Timemachine - never been activated
  • re-indexed spotlight as suggested in a support article.
  • deleted a dormant user (6GB) and deleted their data
  • I have emptied the trash.

What else can i do?

Restart your Mac, holding down command-r until you hear the chime. This will boot you into Lion Recovery mode. From the Utility menu, select Disk Utility, then select Macintosh HD when the Disk Utility window appears. Click the Repair Disk button- if there are repairs reported, run it again. Once complete, restart your Mac.

If that does not free up space, drop a note.

Thank HTH, I ran the repair as you suggested without any issues being detect and the disk size remain unchanged. Any suggestions?

I was thinking of using WhatSize but 12 bucks seems like price gouging and i am not convinced it will find the issue. Is there any way to "tree" a folder (like in the DOS days) and see all the files in it - hidden or not?

In that comprehensive guide, Pondini recommends using a utility that visibly shows all occupied space. Read the purple text in the green box - it might be worth the investment of $12.99. The difference between it and the free utilties is that it can be run "As Admin" which is the only thing that will reveal hidden folders and files not normally visible to the user. I suspect that's what the problem is. Fixing it may be another matter.

That guide is as complete and priceless as anything you are likely to find anywhere. All I can suggest is to make sure you didn't miss anything.

If you have studied it thoroughly and still can't find the 600 GB gorilla hiding in your hard disk I don't know what else to do.

I had the same issue and deleting on my desktop and also using external HD as scratch disk for imovie and deleting never shown at all.

I ran the disk Inventory X and it shows all the files in hlink folder which is used by "Disk Drill" application... How Diskdrill app avoid emptying trash is beyond me and it also very difficult to get rid of it as well.

I will avoid disk drill as it shows under hand methods to sell its products.

First once Disk Inventory shows the files use it show in the finder and start deleting this horrible hlink folder.

Guys,

The culprit is Disk Drill... It basically kept down deep all files (hudreds of Gb) I deleted over the past year from my 750 Gb Harddrive...

User uploaded file

Even after deleting Disk Drill it leaves a hidden partition called .cleverfiles. After using the application FreeDiskSpace I discovered that my 750 Gb harddrive was storing including the deleted files deep down a total of 1,5 Tb and that the famous partition .cleverfiles had a folder containing over 1,29 Tb of deleted files... the name of that hidden folder is hlink.ref

Well at least I discovered where was the 450 Gb Space Gorilla on my HD, which in fact happens to be a 1.29 Tb monster of files...

I haven't deleted it yet, as it is a goldmine of files I deleted and lost ages ago... at least I will be able to recover some of the files I've been crying for... Also I want to be sure how to delete it a and make it disappear for ever...

Well no need to spend 12 bucks when you can download FreeDiskSpace for free from the AppStore...

Hope this will help you solve the problem...

I had the same problem. .cleverfiles is a hidden partition created by the application Disk Drill. If you enable the "Guarenteed Protection" it moves all deleted files to the hidden folder instead of actually deleting them. You can disable it altogether or configure to only keep certain Folders or only user a certain amount of space. I didn't know the feature existed and It was hard to find even after I read it exisited. From the main disk drill screen, expand the main drive, and select "Potect" next to the Hard Drive.
