iPhone flash won't turn off (remains on even when phone is turned off)

Question

iPhone flash won't turn off (remains on even when phone is turned off)

I recently updated my iPhone software to 5.1, a day later and the flash light on the back of the iPhone will not turn off.

It remains on at low brightness and will not turn off, even when the phone is not turned on.

I have tried both the Restore using iTunes (original settings) and a hard reset holding the home and sleep buttons on the iPhone itself.

I was wondering if this problem has been seen before and if there is any solutions to the problem, or if i have to visit the Apple store and have the phone looked at directly (and possibly (hopefully!) replaced..

If basic troubleshooting (reset, restart, restore first from backup then as new) does not rectify the problem, then it's time for a trip to the Genius bar.

Mostly likely it will be a cost replacement if its OOW (out of warranty), just a heads up.

Just to clarify... do you mean when the phone is asleep/in standby, or do you mean when powered off? If you mean when powered off, then there is definitely something physically wrong. I would guess moisture related.

Take it in and have it looked at. If the light is staying on when the phone is powered off, I would not consider it safe to use. A short like that could pose a fire risk.

To be honest most of these issues are the result of liquid damage (that i have seen anyway) and that places it OOW.

I had this issue back in April, took it to the Apple store - they took it in the back and said they were going to take it apart but wound up returning with the phone moments later, light did go off. I was told to make sure to shut down the camera/camcorder app and power off the phone from time to time. Phone worked fine until now, the problem has returned...I have an appt to visit my local Apple store, hopefully the April tech put some notes in the system!

Just a thought: remove any app that uses the flashlight (not including the camera).
