Need hard drive urgent help/advice!!!???

Bought my imac 27" in late December 2010. Ran disk utility for a routine check this weekend and the panel on the left showed 1tb in red and the message said should contact a technicia as my hard drive had a serious problem. The technician came today and said there is an electrical issue with my hard drive meaning the electricity does not reach the the hard drive correctly so need a new drive. He told us that this is quite normal in imac but not untilvafter 4 or 5 years. Has anyone heard of this issue and in particular after just little over a year of purchase.?

The description of an issue with the electricity reaching the hard drive sounds like a made up response.

Your hard drive has a feature called SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) which was originally developed by IBM and ultimately became a 'standard' used by most major hard drive manufacturers. Your hard drive has been constantly monitoring and logging its performance. If Disk Utility application indicated in red that you have an issue then it is good that you called a service provider. Hopefully you've also been maintaining a current backup of your data. I personally keep two backups just in case because the pictures of my kids are too valuable to me to risk losing them.

If you want an in depth report about the state of your hard drive I suggest downloading a copy of Smart Utility that you can run in the demo mode to pull the SMART log files off your hard drive. I use it regularily on my own systems to determine whether my hard drive is encountering a growing number of errors. You can download a copy here:

The technician sent by the store of purchase took the imac with him. The store is an official apple retailer. We aren't computer savy so have to get outside help. We noticed this right after checking disk utility after setting up time capsule for the firstvtime. Can it be related? What is best course of action to ensure technician is not taking advantage and making sure there is a valid reason for changing the hard drive? Tecnically the warranty expired 2.5 months ago but surely given it is such a serious issue on such a new computer apple will either fix or replace this right? I mean it cost us a fortune which we invested in an apple because of the reputation it is supposed to have.

I have had excellent luck with my Apple products, but occasionally, with any product, things can go wrong. I have no doubt that the technician who picked up your system will take care of your iMac and return it to you in good health even if the diagnosis he gave to you seems a bit strange. Hopefully your drive will fall into the replacement program that den.thed highlighted.

If you want to investigate futher you could ask the tech whether you can get your original drive back in case you want to do data recovery at some point. There are inexpensive external hard drive enclosures that would allow you to attach the hard drive via your USB or Firewire port.

If Disk Utility reported a serious problem with the drive, then there is a good chance that it really needs to be replaced.

I dont think Apple will replace or repair it for free 2.5 months after the end of warranty.

A week or two after the end, maybe yes, but not after 2.5 months.

But like den.thed said there was a recall for drives in iMac that came out just after yours.

Did you go to the link in den.thed's post to enter your serial number to see if your drive is covered by the replacement program?

Your machine is a little bit holder than the recall but it is worth a try.

Even if it is not covered, you could try calling Apple and ask if they will accept to replace it.
