Hello California,

You must forgive my stupidity I have no idea what you are referring to...I have never used any Apple product since the first computer in college 20+ years ago. 😊 So that being said all I need is to know wether or not all 2nd gen ipod touch has external speakers so that i can listen to the music without the earphones.

Or do I need to get the 3rd gen? for the purpose of listening without the earphones.

Thank you.

The 2nd gen iPod touches are identical to the 3rd gens.

That is not the case.

They marketed the 8gb 2nd gens as 3rd,

Who is "they"? Not Apple.

It has all the capibilities of a 3rd gen.

A second generation Touch cannot install iOS 5, so it does not have the same capabilities as the third generation Touch. It cannot run any App which requires iOS 4.3 or higher.

Hi maximumslowness - (great name),

The 2nd gen Touch has one internal speaker, so you can listen to it, (both left and right channels) without headphones.

However - it's a small single speaker and it is not very loud. It's not designed for quality listening (neither is the speaker on the 3rd gen as far as I know) and probably will not be adequate if there is a lot of background noise nearby.

One option is to drop the iPod (not literally!) into an iPod Docking station so that the sound can play out through a self-contained mains-powered amplified speaker, which will also charge your iPod. There are many on the market. On the bottom of the iPod is the 30-pin dock connector which can be used to feed the audio to a docking station. Another option is simply to use a cable to connect from the headphone socket to the audio input on any amplifier.

Yet another is to plug in a small fold-up style speakers, such as

or http://www.amazon.co.uk/Generation-Capsule-iPhone-Laptop-Speaker/dp/B002XNO7FQ/r ef=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1332326656&sr=8-6

I've no idea how good the sound is, you'll have to judge that for yourself. The links are both to a UK store, but most countries will have a similar option.

I do not recieve any form of payment or compensatiion for the above links.

This is the actual article that clearly says exactly what I said. Here is the quoted paragraph from the article:

"Following the introduction of the 3rd generation iPod Touch, Apple also continued offering the 2nd generation 8 GB version, upgraded to the same iPhone OS version as the new 3rd generation devices. The iPod Touch (3rd generation) is model A1318. Apple as well sold many refurbished iPod Touch 2nd generation models with the 3rd generation software effectively making them a 3rd generation unit. These can be identified by software version 4.3.5."
