Screen Sharing, very confused...

So I heard that Screen Sharing can be used to remote access your other computers - this is useful to me to transfer files or to set up an email account for co-workers who have difficulty. It would always be used via Internet.

Either I am thinking too hard, or I am not thinking at all or I have just misunderstood because I cant figure out anything about getting this to work.

I have an iCloud account at home & at work (test scenario) & screen sharing is enabled on both computers - so now what?

How do I go about connecting to my computer at home given that I have the IP/dynamic dns?

It is working fine using my iPod's "log me in" app, so I presume there are no network issues for Screen Sharing.

This sounds daft but I cant find where I am supposed to go or click to begin initiating this process?

From my experiance, Screen Sharing can only be done within your Local Network.

So for example. if you had several Macs at home, you can VNC them but you cannot (from home) use Screen Sharing to access your work computer and vise-versa.

I personally use LogMeIn to remote into my work computer from home if I need to do something on it.

This article says you can do it over the internet also*

I have made sure the VNC option is active, but I still dont understand how to initiate a connection - eg* how do i get up a box that i can enter an ip or domain?

For a local network where would this be? I dont see anything obvious.

Thanks, thats helpful.

But I still dont understand because after following those steps at the bottom of the page it says*

Begin sharing your screen

  1. In the left sidebar of a Finder window, click the disclosure triangle next to Shared to expand that section.
  2. Click the computer you want to use, and then click Share Screen.

But I do not have any "shared" option in my sidebar even though all those options are ticked in finder prefs.

Perhaps this means that it MUST be the same Apple ID on both computers? Surely not?

OK, thank you. Well found.

That is kind of daft IMO, all that effort to connect computers & then you cant do it to another account. Its like they took a 3rd party app for networking & crippled it.

Anyway, thanks for helping coolc. I appreciate your effort & time :-)

Lion feels a little bit like the move from OS9 to OSX these days; nice to look at, but way behind what we had before - I just hope we dont have to wait to long to get things back on track.
