iPad 3 Why 3G does not work after being on WiFi

When I take my iPad 3 out of my house, I have to reboot it to get a 3G connection. The 3g icon shows that it is connected but when I try and access any connection it says no internet connection. My iPad 1 seemed to work ok. I've also tried putting it in Airplane mode and back again but this has no effect.

Any suggestions please? Many thanks.

OK, I have the same problem with my iPad3, but never with the iPad2 or the iPhone4. Swisscom is my network provider, I have not tried different network providers.

It does not help to switch to airplane mode and back again, nor to reset Network Settings, nor to turn off an on cellular data. Most surprising is that turning on and off airplane mode does require that I unlock the sim card again. I am never asked to unlock the sim card a second time.

Power off and power on again seems to work!

I suspect a register or state that is not being reset during normal operation, only during power up. Like with a lost interrupt, the device thinks that a state or condition exists, but this is no longer true. As long as the device believes that the state is OK, it will never reset the state and reestablish a working network connection.

I am in Singapore on the Singtel multisim. I have both the iPad 2 and the new iPad.

Everything i get out of my home wifi coverage, the new iPad will have 3G connection issue. I had to reset the network to get it working again. iPad 2 does not have this problem. I had tried to switch the sim card and it is not working. I am very disappointed with this new iPad.

Tried calling the Apple support in Singapore and all i get is all the silly trouble shooting step like going to telco or going to the service center. I thought i am unlucky this time to have a fautly set. Apparently, this is not the case since there is so much feedback on this. Is there anyone here that manage to get a set that dun have this problem ?

I have the same problem here in Toronto Canada. I have the new iPad 64 GB wifi + 4G version, on Rogers network. I have owned all three versions of the iPad and never have had any issue with connectivity until the new iPad. Here are my observation:

  • when starting the iPad, it takes longer to search for a network connection
  • when the iPad switches between LTE and 3G, it looses connectivity to the network even though it shows a 3/4/5 bar signal strength
  • turning the cellular on/off fixes the problem temporarily until the next time it does a switch between LTE and 3G speed

Not sure if it's a carrier problem or software/hardward issue. I just want to have this problem corrected as it is very frustrating and annoying to have to constantly switching cellular on/off.😢

Thanks.

hi to everyone,

me and my uncle have two iPad 3's one with 16GB and 4G and one with 32GB and 4G. We have both a contract by T-Mobile Germany but different Data contracts. What we have in common is the same problem that everyone else here hase. We loose our connection with T-Mobile and have to do a soft reset or reset the netword settings to get a new connection.

T-Mobile Germany says it's not there fault, Apple says it's a problem of the provider but they would repair or change the whole iPad but can't garantie that it will work after the change. I hope we get help soon.

Can everyone confirm the following conformity's are in place while experiencing their problem.

Cellular data plan is sold separately. The iPad with Wi-Fi + 4G model you purchase is configured to work with a particular cellular network technology. Check with your carrier for compatibility and cellular data plan availability.

Testing conducted by Apple in February 2012 using preproduction iPad units and software. Testing consisted of full battery discharge while performing each of the following tasks: video playback, audio playback, and Internet browsing using Wi-Fi or cellular data network. Video content was a repeated 2-hour 23-minute movie purchased from the iTunes Store. Audio content was a playlist of 358 unique songs, consisting of a combination of songs imported from CDs using iTunes (128-Kbps AAC encoding) and songs purchased from the iTunes Store (256-Kbps AAC encoding). Internet over Wi-Fi and cellular data network tests were conducted using dedicated web and mail servers, browsing snapshot versions of 20 popular web pages, and receiving mail once an hour. All settings were default except: Wi-Fi was associated with a network (except for Internet browsing over cellular data network); the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks and Auto-Brightness were turned off. Battery life depends on device settings, usage, and many other factors. Battery tests are conducted using specific iPad units; actual results may vary.

Coppertiger, you offer no assistance or solutions whatsoever with your post. The passage you quote is from Apple's battery specs. This is not a battery problem. Are you blaming the carriers?? If Apple wants verification that this fault exists, they can send me an email and come and pick up my 2 iPads and run their own verification tests - they have my Apple ID. I've spent hours doing my own tests to get rid of this problem and have no interest in running un-proven theories promoted by dreamers. Your posts spend a lot of time pondering the change in use of the iPad from wifi to 3G and back, as if this switching has something to do with it. I have had this problem continually on the new iPad that has never been connected to any Wifi - in fact I turned wifi off from the the moment I first used it because it is used in an area where the user can not log in to any of the wifi networks. Fortunately Apple in Australia has offered to provide a full refund on all 4G iPads so I guess I will take them up on that offer.

hi joerechner,

have you called t-mobile, if so what did they told you? i have called them this morning and they told me that this is an IOS problem and no t-mobile problem. they also told me that there has to be an IOS update in order to fix the problem, but they couldn't tell me when it's gonne be released.

i hope apple will fix this soon, i have a new ipad for almost a month and i can't alsways use it how i would like to.

it's a shame i spent 100€ more for the 4G modell and got a "wifi sometimes" modell - very sad

well said!

Just be careful not to become too agressive. It would not be the first thread that Apple deletes.

With T-Mobile in Gemany I have the same issue. I am coming from IPad1 - never had anything like that.

Would Steve Jobs had reacted already?

Apple: react now !

Otherwise you are about to loose your fanbase of early-adopters

Apr 12, 2012 8:09 AM in response to Coppertiger

Dear Copertiger,

I have bought a consumer device and would expect it to work the same way as the pervious iPads. I was not aware the the iPad3 is only for network specialists and experts. If the Ipad3 is so inmature that it only works under certain conditions it should say so in Press, Advertising and in Press. This of cause would be a 180 degree turn from Steve Jobs heritage.

If Apple does not tell me how I get my iPad working I will return it.

Pleade advise me what to do..

Apr 12, 2012 8:22 AM in response to moof66

I notice a lot of people running simulations to recreate the problem.

The app, System Status contains a page, System Log.

The system log can be emailed to your email account, then forwarded to Apple.

If someone can capture a clean system log of the problem occurring, this will be most helpful to the apple engineers attempting to reproduce the problem.

BTW, today when it hapened, I was simply dring the car without WiFi enabled. My navigator was using the iPhone as a GPS solution.

I love my iPad3. The resolution is phenomenal.

Apple, please hurry with the solution!

Apr 12, 2012 9:15 AM in response to inbrand

@ inbrand - great metaphor!

in germany we have two big carries without any problems i think. they are o2 and vodafone. E-Plus and T-Mobile Germany have problems. I have changed my sim cards from t-mobile no sim card will work in my iPad. if I put the same sim card which doesn't work in my iPad into my iPhone 4 or 4s they work perfectly well. So I would say it's either the IOS or the network operators which have to get an software update. I think there was a similar problem with the first iPad which was solved with a little IOS Update but it was only noticed out of the USA.
