Cellular reconnectivity issues with 3rd Gen iPad 3G/4G/LTE

I've read a few other threads regarding a reconnection issue with the new (3rd Gen) iPad. I'm creating a discussion so people can put there thoughts here regarding the issues they are having with reconnection of cellular data connections.

I have AT&T 64B iPad Gen 3 with 4G/LTE. Black. Works just fine on wifi and my LTE screams at home and work. Faster than my cable at home. I have noticed something behavior regarding data connection when it's lost (like in a tunnel). I ride DC Metro to work and go through a few tunnels. Of course, my data connection drops in the tunnels. When I come back out the indicator on the iPad indicates 5 bars signal and LTE again. Problem is the data connection isn't there, no matter what app I try. I even get a popup window say my cellular data plan has not been activated (huh?). This isn't true since I am on, and have been using a plan. It does this whether it's 4G or LTE reconnection. Not sure about 3G because I haven't seen 3G icon popup on this iPad yet.

I'm thinking this may be an authentication issue? Else, why would it popup that warning? Anyway, all I do is is go into settings turn cellular data off and back on again and everything is fine.

I'm guessing that there could be a software fix for this in the future as there are quite a bunch of people having this problem with reconnection to cellular.

Please post your issues here in this discussion if you have this problem. Maybe we can figure something out.

🙂

I have the same issue and this is my 1st iPad, so it's not a restore issue, it's a hardware/software issue.

The iPad 3 uses the same antenna for cellular data and Wifi and I've noticed that if I disable the Wifi, then I don't lose 3G on cellular. It's only if I'm swapping between Wifi and Cellular data that I get the problem, it's as if the Wifi somehow knocks out the cellular data capability, even though you have a good signal. As others have noticed, only power off/on helps restore connectivity and then if you enable Wifi, it goes again.

This could be a far more serious problem than we realise... 😟

Same issues as well.

iPad3 32G Verizon 4G LTE.......at home 2 bars of signal strength....of only 3G.

It works well near major highways and downtown...just terrible at my home.

I have until Thursday to return this iPad3 and continue to use my old iPad1 with the Mi-Fi card.

This is unreal about the signal reception of these new units.

"The issues appear to affect the WiFi-only model of Apple's latest hardware, with SIM-connected variants apparently safe due to the black antenna panel"

Our issue still is no public!

I am located in Denver and have had the same issue with my new black iPad 64GB + 4G with AT&T. Have gone through all the fixes including swaping out for a new sim. Wifi works perfectly. The connection on 4G is non existant. Despite numerous attempts to jump start the 4G, no connection has lasted longer than a minute. Despite what appears as full coverage on the upper left I am always greeted with "could not activate cellular network".

After 3 weeks of no data, I opted to return the device and am waiting for a Verizon model. My download speeds with AT&T were no better than with my 2nd generation iPad. The Apple rep at the store confirmed this problem was not listed as a known issue with the new iPad.

I have 64GB, WIFI+4G with AT&T. No LTE in my area. My problem is that my 4G connection is weak. On Sunday I was with family and everyone had cellular connections with various iPhones and iPads - except me! I had to go out to the porch to get a connection. I moved from an iPad 1 and I don't get service in many of the locations where my iPad 1 connected without issue. I've never seen a 3G connection, however, it did show EDGE today when I was in a stairwell at work. I turned WIFI off the whole day as I moved around campus and the connection appeared to get stronger as the day progressed. However, at times in the same location it would just disappear. Was going to exchange it today but with a two week wait online figured the Apple Store would probably be out of stock. Everything else is great so I hate to exchange one problem for another problem especially since others have said the replacements have the same issues.

Rodz thank-you I hope so too.

The 1-2 week wait was a concern but possibly worth it if the issue is resolved.

Interestingly enough the local Apple retail store had a large quantity of AT&T 64 GB in stock but virtually no Verizon units. I checked all the stores in the state of Colorado.

Does anyone know why the differences in carrier inventory?

Same here,

I live in the UK and am now on a second "New iPad" with an unstable 3G connection. It tells me I am connected to T-Mobile via 3G with plenty of reception but I cannot access any internet sites, internet enabled apps, etc. I keep getting a box telling me that it can't activate cellular connection.

In order to regain a 3G connection I have to either: Power down the iPad, take out the sim card, reset network settings, and even, dare I say it, Restore to factory settings! Now, having to do this several times a day is more than an inconvenience. I have even gone to the trouble of getting a replacement sim card from T-Mobile just to factor out the possibility of it being a problem. Which I managed to swap yesterday. 3G was ok up until 30 minutes ago and; HEY PRESTO! the problem is back again!

The iPad works absolutely fine over wifi with lightning fast connection. But the 3G is, well non-existant.

What's going on?

Apr 16, 2012 10:01 AM in response to Calistograph

Germany calling: my "new iPad" cannot jump back and forth between WiFi and 3G. Re-booting is the only (weird) solution to the problem. The Apple people on the phones are finally admitting that this "is a known problem", which is nice. A solution would be even nicer. Unfortunately, Apple's information policy on this matter is pre-stone age (ignore the mammoth, maybe it'll go away). Been using Apple since 1983, and this show is unimpressive. Wonder what Steve would say?
