Q: Cellular reconnectivity issues with 3rd Gen iPad 3G/4G/LTE

I've read a few other threads regarding a reconnection issue with the new (3rd Gen) iPad. I'm creating a discussion so people can put there thoughts here regarding the issues they are having with reconnection of cellular data connections.

I have AT&T 64B iPad Gen 3 with 4G/LTE. Black. Works just fine on wifi and my LTE screams at home and work. Faster than my cable at home. I have noticed something behavior regarding data connection when it's lost (like in a tunnel). I ride DC Metro to work and go through a few tunnels. Of course, my data connection drops in the tunnels. When I come back out the indicator on the iPad indicates 5 bars signal and LTE again. Problem is the data connection isn't there, no matter what app I try. I even get a popup window say my cellular data plan has not been activated (huh?). This isn't true since I am on, and have been using a plan. It does this whether it's 4G or LTE reconnection. Not sure about 3G because I haven't seen 3G icon popup on this iPad yet.

I'm thinking this may be an authentication issue? Else, why would it popup that warning? Anyway, all I do is is go into settings turn cellular data off and back on again and everything is fine.

I'm guessing that there could be a software fix for this in the future as there are quite a bunch of people having this problem with reconnection to cellular.

Please post your issues here in this discussion if you have this problem. Maybe we can figure something out.

I had the same problem. Solution is simple. Turn off LTE. I believe it is a bug.

Sorry, but this doesn't work. It is probably another one of those random "it works" experiences that happens mysteriously, but does not solve the problem! Will Apple ever give it a real try, with something like an up-date on the iPad3 firmware??????

Good Luck!  I've had the same issue since day one, March 16.  I've got a Verizon one.  I live 1 hour from a Verizon tire and 2 hours from a Verizon Store and Apple Store.  I've made the trip to the Verizon store once, Apple store once and 4 trips to the Verizon tower.  I'm on my second SIM cared and now my second Ipad - got a new one last night from the "Genius Bar" at the Apple store.  Well the new one is doing the same thing.  Won't connect in an "Extended" area but works great in "civilization".  My wifi works great too.  Just not on 3G.  Mine even says "Extended 3G".  My 2 Iphone 4's work like champs too.

Well, the Verizon tech I spoke to today actually admitted to me that they can make no guarantee that the Ipad will work in an Extended area.  They also continued to say that the Iphone works because it is a cell phone and converts the signal differently than the Ipad which is why I can get on the internet from my phones but not my Ipad.  She then foolishly continued to tell me that I could purchase the Network extender for my home so my Ipad would work there.  I told her why would I do that when I can use my Ipad through the Wifi connection.  Then she said I could always activate my "hotspot" service on my phone and run my Ipad through my phone.  I said, why would I pay $30 a month for a hotspot?

So my only option now is to return the device and hope that one day there is a fix.  I'm thinking about getting an Ipad 2 -but am afraid of similar issues.  But I've seen two people I work with who's Ipad 2's work without issue.

5.1.1 is now available and it says it addresses our problem. The download was no problem. Let's see what happens when the iPad hits the road! - Anyhow Apple: thank you (finally).

5.1.1 has definitely solved the problem for us in Central Europe. WiFi/3G/EDGE transition is smooth and no further adjustments were necessary.

I got a similiar problem. My new iPad 4G used to get 25+MBPS speed, but 3 weeks ago, it barely connected to the celluler data and it was painfully slow. I tried to reset to to factory condition and restore it but that diddn't solve the problem. After reading posts in this thread, I guess this might be something to do with my ATT user account. I first checked the celluler data account setting and refresed my subscription. Then went to general setting_usage_celluler and reset the usage. The 4G speed is back! Now it's 25-30MBPS again.
