Can you use Maps on the WiFi version only of the new iPad?

I have the iPad Gen 1 with both WiFi and cellular data capabilities. Since I can now tether my iPad to my iPhone I no longer maintain my cell phone account on my iPad. Even with my cell phone data plan off, I can see a location pin move on the map if I first set this up while I am connected to a WiFi area.

I was wondering if the new iPad with WiFi only hardware, will still show the pin on the Maps app moving as you travel with your iPad - if you have first set this up while you were in a WiFi zone where you opened the Map app and set up directions?

iPad, iOS 5.1

Thanks for the feedback. So it sounds like I can use maps if I am in a WiFi area, or if I am tethered, but you are not recommending I stay tethered for long since this will draw a lot of data while connected.

So I guess I could set up the map, get my initial bearings by seeing the pin move while tethered......then kill the tether connection and leave off until I needed to get another location verification.
