Latest version of Itunes crashes when synching commences with Apple TV

I'm finding that itunes repeatedly crashes on my early 2009 Mac pro with Lion installed. Itunes crashes immediately when it attempts to sync with my early model Apple TV. Everything seemed to be ok until I installed the latest version of itunes. Interestingly, itunes seems to be ok if Apple TV is not synching such as when I disconnect the power from my Apple TV. Any solutions?
