I have an iphone 4S and have discovered that it does not support SMS (it always sends a URL to a website instead of a text message). All the gimmicks are turned off (iMessage, MMS messaging, siri, etc.) to try and get it to behave like a phone.
Is it possible to use my macbook air to send text messages instead ?

Since an iPhone 4S should be able to send SMS texts, there's obviously an issue there which needs to be resolved. However, that aside, you can use your MBA to send SMS instead. There are a few possible solutions, but the one that leaps to mind first is SMS Mac (http://www.smsmac.com/en/) which is Lion compatible and should solve your problem.

By the way, the latest iphones only use MMS (no SMS) so I guess we have to wait for IOS6, 7, 8, ... for the issue to be resolved.

Well, then I must not be clear what SMS is, because I never had reason to think my 4S wasn't doing it, along with MMS!
Maybe it only works in america then. Mine sends MMS regardless of what the settings are.
I hadn't heard of it as an issue, but then I wasn't looking since mine seems to do exactly what I want and expetced it to. However, I have no reason to doubt what you say!
