    Great! What's the app called?

Name of the app is "Contacts sync for gmail". Awesome app... Hope this helps many many Apple-Troubled users of iPhone...

I doubt that'll work for my setup. I don't sync my contacts in any way except with my own computer. Privacy issues could potentially wreck my client confidentiality.

    Thanks anyway.

Mac--I fixed the problem by disconnecting cloud backup services in my iPhone, then in iTunes on my Mac, unchecked sync contacts, Sync'd, then rechecked sync contacts. and Sync'd again. The contacts I added on my iPhone now were on my Macs Address book! I did however end up with duplicates, but that was easy enough to fix with Find Duplicates and merge inside Address Book.

in my particular situation (iPhone 3G, iOs 4.2.1, OSX10.7.5) this thread helped me with an even easier solution:

Hi I think it is because the 3g 4.2.1 device is not compatiable with icloud.  i went into my icloud settings and unchecked sync contacts.  then restarted itunes selected contacts and cal, checked replace what is on phone and then did a sync and it worked.

    Hope it works for you.

Guys I had this problem with my wifes iphone. She just had a new imap email added through work and this became the default account to add new addresses to. This meant all new addresses were added to the address book on her address server at work and not icloud or address book on her mac at home!! Anything on this server would not syncronise elsewhere as this would comprimise security.

Goto Settings/Mail,Contacts etc/contacts and change the default account to either icloud or your mac etc. Then onwards every new address you create will sync properly.

I just bought an iPhone 5S and synced it easily on iTunes until I tried to do my contacts.  My 17 year old son figured it out in seconds.  I had to sign on to iCloud on my new phone before it would sync.  I don't know why contacts were different but this made it work for me.  Good luck!

Thanks for the input ccardozo... but I refuse to use iCloud - its disempowering theft of accessibility to my own data is way outside acceptable. I even installed Ma-ver-icks recently then reversed the installation back to MLion because I hadn't realised some of its features had 'iCloud only' functionality. The day iCloud gives me open access to my data is the day I'll use it. ;-)
