Q: iPad 3 "Death Grip" - video showing WHY so many people are having wifi connection problems!

OK I think a lot of you are confusing weak wifi reception for "the death grip" - I've uploaded a youtube video demonstrating how my signal will go from perfect to almost nothing if you hold the ipad in landscape mode on the bottom left corner (with volume buttons on the bottom, home button on the left).

You can see the youtube video I uploaded here:

http://youtu.be/rB9nI-Fv2o0

This clearly demonstrates the ipad 3 design is very flawed, as it is only natural to hold the ipad on the bottom left corner with your hand when using it! This device is designed to be held, not rest on a table!!!

I apologize for my poor filming, it was done with an iphone 4S by me while also trying to demonstrate the problem, lol. I don't see how apple is going to fix this with firmware/software... iPad 3 is fundamentally broken...

n+1 from here: I replicated the exact same phenotype using iPad 16gb black wifi4G with a 2.4ghz band. Thanks for the detailed info, Ryan.

I don't see this problem on my new iPad 32GB WiFi, black. I do have it in a Kensington clear rear protector though.

I see more variation for signal strength in the orientation of the iPad relative to my E4200 Linksys router. I see this also with a Netgear USB dual band wireless adapter and the E4200. It gets max signal strength at 5MHz parallel to ground, at 2.4 MHz it gets max signal vertical in relation to the E4200 which sits flat.

I've been resting my new iPad 3 on a cushion in portrait mode and the wifi reception comes and goes. I have to switch the wifi off and on to retrieve the signal. This never happened with my iPad 2. Does anyone know If Apple are going to replace these or fix via an update?

I have this problem too. Mine is ipad3 32gb wifi. I took it back for an exchange. They didn't have 32gb so I got 16gb instead. Unfortunately, same problem exist. I will wait 30 days and get another exchange. Other posts indicate there are iPads without death grip issues, so I will keep so exchanging it until I get a good iPad. Apple will end up with lot of returned iPads.

Rotate your iPad 180 degrees (camera on top left). Problem solved!

And make sure bottom of iPad on portrait mode is not touching your body. Also, while its tilted on landscape mode, make sure your hand is not touching the left side of iPad when typing. Obviously, you shave not used it in real world.

1st generation iPad had it right when they placed the wifi antenna in the middle behind plastic apple logo.

Also was able to duplicate this problem, black wifi only iPad 3rd gen. Ran speed tests, made sure it wasn't the router or Internet by checking against both another Mac device (MBA) and an android device, which performed fine. I just got the iPad so I'll be calling apple ASAP, this is not acceptable for the amount of money that I spent.

I can also replicate this on 16 GB black wifi only iPad. This might explain the seemingly random weak signal or disconnection. I hadn't noticed any of this until the latest update, but that might be a coincidence.

I bought my ipad3 3 months ago.  Its a 32gb black wifi only.  Rotated the whole thing. Put it in the so-called death grip position.  Ive been using my ipad in death grip position so many times because i had to for some games that i play.  But it does not do that.  Purchased it in southeast asia,

New ipad (ipad 3) -does the signal loss just as reported reported here so please stop the denying on the thread - not helpful!.  What is the solution?  A soft reset helps but not permanently.  So Apple - what is the deal - how many Ipad swaps do I need to go through to get one that does not have this issue. Going in tomorrow to swap this one.  How many trips will I have to make to the Apple store until I gat a good Ipad?  This one is gone tomorrow.

Once in a while I experience a HUGE signal drop in my ipad3, not with any other device. iPhone right next to it with full signal. Messed with every imaginable setting, forget network, restarted router. Nothing helped... So I went "back to the basics" hard reset.... Fixed it, lol... For now.... I've owned every ios device since inception. That being said, given recent experiences and shady practices by apple, I'm getting off the band wagon. My 6 month old iPad3 no longer exists according to apples web site, comparison chart etc... Wth? Lighting dock? No added feature but to render EVERY Charger, USB cable, my tascam audio recording interface, AND MY ALESIS imultimix pro-audio mixing board... Utterly useless... Thanks for the good times... See ya next life...

OMG, I also have this death grip issue on iPad 3

No wonder Apple discontinued it in just 6 months.

Death grip continues on ipad 4... So I exchanged it, but it happened again. I exchanged it 2 more times but times on same day but death grip continues to haunt me. Btw this was at Target store. They had ipad 4 on display for demo but it did not have a death grip. So I asked an employee if I can get the display model, but they can't because it belongs to Apple. I'm thinking iPads sold in Apple stores may not have this issue.
