New AT&T iPad 4G only connects on EDGE outside of US

Here in the Cayman Islands we have two local carriers both offering HSPA+ at 2100 MHz. I have two iPad 2 3G's and several iPhones (3GS, 4, 4S) that all connect to the local networks using 3G. I have sim cards for both carriers. Yesterday I got two of the new iPad 64GB+4G (AT&T) and I can confirm that both of these only connect to the local carriers via EDGE. I have tried multiple sim cards, done full restores, setup as new iPads etc. Nothing made any difference. I have spoken with the tech support of both carriers and they have no explanation, especially since the sim cards work fine in older iPads and the iPhones. Interestingly I had a pre-paid AT&T sim card that I reactivated last night (a one month data plan plus a one month international coverage plan) and when I put that into either of the new iPads I can connect to both local carrier networks via 3G. So does that mean the new iPad is not completely unlocked? I have seen a few similar postings regarding EDGE connections only so hopefully this will be addressed via a quick software update. It's kind of sad that my new iPads have slower connection speeds (via cellular) than my older ones.

I'm not sure if locked is the correct term but it may be something to do with that. I also have an active AT&T pre-paid SIM, with an International Data option, that I use when I travel. If I put that SIM into my new iPad I get a 3G connection to the local carrier here in Cayman. So that would seem to give credence to the locked argument.

I am well aware that they are not locked, and that is why I stated that locked was probably not the full explanation. But it has absolutely nothing to do with the carrier, sim card, 3G data plan or 3G signal. I have confirmed this by switching a fully functioning 3G sim card from an iPad 2 to a new iPad. Same SIM card, same plan, same carrier. And this is happening in other locations around the world.

I'm in telecom sector working for all providers in suriname. I just came from the company that supports 3g on 850mhz.

They did a trace om the imei/imsi.

The ipad 2 connect to 3g networks(seen at switch level) and the ipad3 never tries to connect to 3g it goes directly to edge. It not that it fails or smth similair it just doesnt connect 3g network.

I think the att 3g is locked because as above the att 3g sim with international data works on the same network on 3g.

I'm going to buy a verizon version as both have same umts:hspa frequencies on lte differ and here we don't have lte.

I have seen the verizon version working on hspa+(4g) att network.

I know for a fact that the 3g freq is not lock. I'll keep everybody posted.

I'm going to test the just installed(we installed hauwei equipmenth 3g network different carrier. This carrier is on 2100

From research i know att uses 850/1900 mhz for umts/hpsa in the usa

doing futher testing.

i need to reset/wipe my ipad a few times before it will roam with att sim on 3g(local sim same network will never show 3g).

If i have 3g anything below i do the 3g will drop and not come back up until you wip/reset the ipad a few times.

Loosing 3G connection and never get it back:

Toggle LTE

Toggle Airplane mode

Tollge cellur data on/off

Tried to get 3G connection back:

Insert/remove sim card

Toggle Cellular data on/off

Toggle LTE on/off

Toggle Roamining on/off

Network reset setting

Reset setting

Manual network selection

Hi from Papua New Guinea.

Believe it or not but I am having the same problem here.

Most annoying as I have been an apple fan since the very first Apple Mac 128 K.

This I05s system software updating method is not in the old Apple ( Steve Jobs ) original spirit of doing things.

More like the dreaded Microsoft.

When is there going to be a fix for this and how can I get it cheap here.

Download rates are very dear here.

Not Happy :(
