Aug. 2008 MBP sporadically crashes with weird colors. Diagnosis needed

Alright so my 2008 MBP has stared to randomly crash since earlier this week. When it crashes, the display becomes overly colorized and I cannot interact with anything on screen. The mouse still moves but no other input works. I have to hold down the power button to do a hard reboot in order to do anything else. The problem is that when I try to restart after this psychodelic crash happens is that I get a kernel panic on start up. I then hard reboot again and try to start up in safe mode. Safe mode hangs up and will not progress past the grey screen with the apple logo and spinning wheel. Then I tried to boot from the install disk which also gives me a kernel panic. I then reset the RAM (apple+control+P+R) and reset the SMC. This allowed me to boot from the disk. I ran disk repair and repaired the disk and disk permissions. The error continued. Then I formatted my hard drive, re-installed the OS (10.6) and transferred my backups onto the now clean install. The error stops, breifly. The error shows back up about a day later. I repeat all of the above steps but now the crash is happening while I am running from the install disk as well. I got all the way to reloading my backups onto my machine and cannot progress any further because it keeps crashing in the middle. It crashes at different times each time it crashes, I do not know why it is crashing, or what is causing it. I had not upgraded anything on my computer and the only thing that I had downloaded before the crashes started was a patch for a game. The fact that it crashes after a clean install leads me to believe that it is a hardware problem and not a software problem. It could be caused by overheating but I run SMCFanControl and have my fans running at max speed any time I am doing anything too taxing. If anyone can diagnose what is wrong I might be able to fix it. If you can tell me how to fix it as well that would be appreciated.

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.

Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents – the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.

If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.

Check to see if the following applies - MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues. The affected computers were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008.

MacBook Pro (Early 2008): Dark bands showing intermittently on built-in display

Mac OS X (10.6)

Use Software Update to update your os to 10.6.8 and anything else that needs to be updated.

Thanks for this. I actually do have the affected graphics card in my Mac. I will contact support and see what they say.

Take it in as soon as possible, while the system still boots. Like Tomorrow. As if it dies completely Apple will not fix it under the extended warranty.
