Were you using wifi sync or hooked up to computer using the USB cable?

Try this, plus phone into power supply, then restart phone. If same problem try connecting to a computer start iTunes and restore phone to new condition or from a backed up copy.

When you say sync? Do you mean the sync stopped or has the phone shut down as no charge left in battery?

Can you provide more details also example were you upgrading phone to iOS 5.1 this way other users may be able to help better with a bit more information on the problem you have.

I cannot restart my phone at all. Completely dead. I don't really want to restore it either just in case there is something I'm not trying. The message states "itunes has detected an iphone in recovery mode. You must restore this phone before it can be used with itunes". What in the world happened? I was just trying to snyc the phone with my song selection in my library.

There is a charge left in the battery.

Was I trying to upgrade to iOS 5.1??? I can't really tell you. I don't think I was.
