macbook pro dvd drive spits out fresh blank dvd

I have a macbook pro with Lion installed

I am trying to write a DVD, but everytime i put a blank DVD it spits it out after 15 seconds or so, doesn't even recognizes as a blank dvd.

This is the details of my dvd drive

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868:

Firmware Revision: KB19

Interconnect: ATAPI

Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)

Cache: 2048 KB

Reads DVD: Yes

CD-Write: -R, -RW

DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW

Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO

Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2009), Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Does it load and recognise a Known Good DVD?

I just burned a fresh DVD, the DVD ran fine with my mac mini, whilst when i tried the same with mackbook pro, it didn't worked. it remained in drive for around 50 seconds and then came out.

I will try with my apple dvd's also after a couple of hours when i get home.

It could be that your Optical drive lens is dirty. You might get a lens cleaning DVD or I came across an interesting solution the other day: Use a compressed air can and shoot a burst inside the drive.

I will try the compressed air can idea, seems it won't do any harm 🙂 lens cleaining DVD may just create more issues.

I wrapped a soft piece of cloth around my credit card, and swiped with it on the left of the drive couple of times, and the drive works like a charm 🙂

A fine lense cloth (for cleaning eye glasses) wrapped around a flat piece of credit card shaped plastic gently inserted and brushed once to the left side seemed to capture plenty of dust from my late 2008 MacBook Pro's Superdrive. Now DVDs work again and stay in the drive.

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best.

Brilliant, thank you! I've been wondering for years why my 2007 Macbook Pro has this problem. Soft cloth on a card worked a treat! Makes me wonder how many drives Apple has needlessly replaced...

I tired the cloth and credit card thing but it didn't work. What worked for me was turning my macbook upsidedown and inserting a disc. IDK why but it worked.
