Is the new iPad compatible with the Alesis IO Dock ?

Hey there,

My wife wants my iPad so I am wondering whether I could upgrade to "the new iPad" as I also own an Alesis IO Dock:

The form factor is quite the same (the new iPad is half a millimeter thicker), so are the connectors and the OS...

So my question is : Has somebody here successfully (or not) used the Alesis IO Dock (pro) with a new iPad ?

I can confirm!! I used my new Ipad Air with the Alesis IO dock and it was awesome. I had a little problem at first but it was due to me having to tell my midi keyboard controller to send out "midi out" in the midi out instead of the USB... I made sure I downloaded my midi controller manual to be extra sure,

I can confirm I did a 5 hour session jamming with some great synths (alchemy, sample tank, audiobus, cubasis) it was very impressive!!!

The Alesis IO dock performed better than my expectations, also I have the 360 rotating case on my ipad air and surprisingly it held snuggled on my Alesis IO dock, I am however going to make sure I put something on the bottom of my ipad air to be safer.

I got the Alesis IO Dock for $129 at Sam Ash. Oh by the way one more thing to confirm, those cheap $6 lightning adapters DID NOT WORK, thankfully I ran down to my local SAMs club and they had a genuine apple lightning adapter and it works flawlessly, I'm very happy with my IO dock, I was able to lower down my main volume, increase my headphone volume insert my 1/4 inch microphone (it also accepts XLR), recorded an awesome vocal session, the midi instruments latency was non existent.

Overall I am very impressed, let's record some more tracks and I'll be back to tell you how it's going,

So I bought my iODock December of 2012. I was using the iPad 2 and everything worked great. Then I got the iPad 3rd Gen summer 2013 and it did not work. I tried everything including two lightning adapters from Apple and nothing. Visited my local Apple store to try to find a solution...nothing emailed Alesis to see if they had a solution...nothing. I decided to check around the web and learned that Alesis is apparently working on coming up with an adapter but as of today (12/23/13) is not available. Since the operating system update (I currently have 7.0.4) I had not tried it and I tested the two 30-pin lightning adapters, the one with the cable and the one without it. They both worked perfectly fine! If you use the one with the cable you will have to use another stand for the iPad as it simply will not work with the Alesis plastic tray adapter that came with my iODock. Some people prefer the fully upright angle, if you don't mind that then that will work. You will not be able to slide the iPad into the iODock but you will be able to use it fully. As for me, I took it one step beyond that as I wanted the flexibility of sitting my iPad on the iODock. The Alesis plastic tray adapter has a thin piece of plastic that is perpendicular to the bottom of the tray. This is located on the end where the 30-pin male socket of the iODock is. I measured my lighting to 30-pin adapter with all the pieces in place, cut a piece of the thin piece of plastic with a steak knife for lack of the right tool, just enough so everything would have a nice fit (it was easy to do), then smoothed out the wrough edges with a nail filer (you can use sand paper as well), tested that everything worked and bam!!...it worked!! The iPad will not have a perfect fit as it is not going to be flushed to the edge of the iODock, but under the circumstances it is the best solution I came up with to use the iPad and the iODock in the way it was designed to work. Not perfect BUT...what is? Hope this helps

Just got the following mail from Alesis:

Official support for the 3rd Generation iPad has not been announced by Alesis. The iO Dock was designed to connect to the iPad 1 and iPad 2. Alesis is working now on a new iO Dock adapter insert that will allow connection to the 3rd Generation iPad. Additional details and updates to compatibility information will be made available on iO Dock page at alesis.com.

This means one thing: it's not a question of connector if they're simply designing a new insert.

The new iPad has to mechanically fit the dock, that's all.

Yesterday I used the Alesis IO Dock with iPad 4th gen with the Apple 30-pin to Lightning adapter (with the short cable inbetween). It worked ok most of the jam session with our band. At one point the iPad started to make the "bling" sound to signify it has started to charge and it did it over and over again every ten seconds or so. This was remedied by simply turning the IO dock off and back on again and then it worked fine until the end of our 3 hour session. I was really happy how Animoog and bunch of other synths performed with it.

"So, IPad 4 with the 30 pin to Lightening adaptor and a fully functional IO Doc..everything including Midi and phantom power mic works."

This is exactly what I want to know. If the answer to this is "yes it does", then I guess this would be a good solution for me. I don't need the iPad for two sit in the dock. I just want all of the adapters & input and outputs to work, including and especially MIDI. But also all audio in and out.

Hello

Thanks for the answer. I however think it cannot be: the connector is the same (both iPads can be hooked to a Mac/PC using the same dock so the connector has to be the same).

There however seem to be a small problem with the iPad3 thickness: the Alesis dock should rather be used without the ipad2 adapter and some folded cardboard eventually be inserted below the tablet in order to relieve the connector from the stress it'd otherwise owe to the ipad3 weight...

I've now used the IO Dock with iPad 4 with the 30 pin to Lightning adaptor for the past 6 months and apart from that one strange episode I described in my earlier post, it has worked 100% ok. The strange "bing, hey I'm charging" loop has never repeated since and all the HW functionality of the IO Dock just works. I've used some of the audio tool apps for room EQ:ing and the mic preamps and phantom power has worked just fine with those. I use the MIDI I/O almost daily and that has worked without issues. And obviously audio out works as well.

I've even used the shorter adaptor (without the interconnect cable) together with the iPad 2 insert for 4 months, but that was a bad idea. The 30 pin connector is slightly bent now in the IO Dock. It still works ok with iPad 2 and 4, but it's clear the thickness of the iPad 4 differs slightly and causes some strain in the connector. I'd advice you to use the adaptor with the short cable between the two connectors as that avoids putting strain to the connector on the IO Dock (and probably in your iPad 4 as well).

I've been wondering this myself. With a bit of research, it seems that the Alesis IO Dock is the best option for a simple, portable recording device but it's obvious that they weren't thinking about the evolution of the iPad when they made it an actual dock. However, I really wouldn't mind if I had to jimmy my iPad Mini into place and use a 30-pin to lightning converter, as long as it all works. So, has anyone that used the converter had any functional problems? Physically fitting an iPad mini into the dock isn't a concern of mine as long as I can use the functions of the dock.
