Is there a way to add different colors besides the green, orange, and purple if you have more than 3 things going on in a particular day??

The color of an event is dictated by the color of the calendar that it's asigned to.
Click the Calendar button, right click on one of your calendars and choose Get Info.
There you'll find a color drop down menu. If you don't like any of the default color click, click Other and you'll get access to an infinte number of choices.
