Is the Heating of New IPad a defect or not?

Is there any official word about the Heating Issue? Since some New IPad owners get NO heating at all, is it a defective unit that heats up ? Will this shorten the life of battery and components? Should I keep my New IPad which heats up or return it and wait till issue is resolved?

I believe this issue is bigger than any of us realizes. When I went to Best Buy this morning to exchange my 64GB Verizon New iPad, I was first told that they do not have any more units to replace it (except open box units), and they also had no iPad 2's to exchange for either. She then called a Manager over, and he said they cannot order any more New iPad's (except a couple of the wi-fi only units) at this time because of the number that have been returned so far because of the heat issue. Not only can you no longer order them through their website, but they can not even order them using their system or even from different stores.

Besides Apple, Best Buy has to be one of the largest retailers of the iPads, and the fact that they are currently on lockdown, seems to indicate something is going on that Apple is not telling us about.

I think the next several weeks will be interesting ones for iPad users and potential iPad owners.

Wow even from different stores? This sounds like an embargo kind of stuff. More drive for me to get the iPad 2.

Thanks for the info, BerthaVanation. Could this be the reason for the 4th straight day of stock plunging of Apple?

By the way, why wouldn't you get open boxed iPad 2 64 GBs? I find that that's a golden opportunity to get it, its just that non 16GB units are no longer in production.

I believe if it feels satisfactory and great overall, there shouldn't be much of a problem unless its a gift.

This is complete misinformation. New iPads are being sold by Apple, Target, and many other suppliers. Best Buy might be out of stock but any story about iPads being returned for heat problems is complete baloney. Sales people are always quick to trash any product they don't have with hopes that you will buy something else.

See the following for customer satisfaction with the new iPad. It's at 98% satisfaction. Definitely off the charts.

  1. Methodology shown?
  2. You're basing it on a 3rd party source, rather than looking at the actual players in Apple's supply chain (Assuming the Best Buy info was true) and how meaningful is the judgement made on the former as compared to the latter?

You're one with extremely lopsided views, but no offense.

It seems there are people in this forum also denying any problem, not sure if paid for this enthusiastic.

Regarding heating of ipad3:

If you play a game like star wars or tank battle for a while the iPad gets very hot. Shutdown was not seen but according to apple there should be no impact. Depending on the model it could be the 3G/4g models get even hotter due to limited space for cooling inside.

For those who experience New iPad heating issues (I hope this is useful to you, Steve jone, you may want to explain some of your usage trends like others did

Here are some tell-tale signs of defective units (heat related):

If your iPad loses charges too quickly and it's no where close to 8-10 hours of usage from full charge due to heat, you may have a problem.

The maximum heat threshold the iPad's battery pack is 35 celcius or 95 farenheits.

If the iPad itself is already producing more heat than what the device as a whole is able to withstand, it is a defect

I've personally made 2 exchanges, now on the 3rd iPad which I'm keeping. The first New iPad I had was a pre-order and I received it days after the debut. But I only got the satisfactory unit about 6 weeks after my first order....

Both unit 1 & 2 were having heat issues, especially while running Retina apps. The worst experience was running Infinity Blade 2 on the second unit, the amount of heat produced was an alarming temperature over 50-60 celcius.

Personal observations

Both units rejected by me were assembled in the Foxconn DL facility

I've also heard a number of reports on overheating, mainly iPads assembled in DL of which some people are claiming to have made several exchanges (talking about DL cases only, excluding DM etc..) and finally receiving a DY which was satisfactory. With just one DY received by these people, it ended the "musical chair game" immediately.

I'm one of them, the DY replacement unit met expectations. Heat itself was contained, it was operating near 35 celcius at most. Running high-end games like IB2, usual temps would be around 30 celcius. All in all, battery doesn't drain screen looks perfectly normal too.

So where was your iPad assembled? It seemed that there is a correlation between assembly plant and defect rates

Note: The first 2 letters of your iPad serial represent the Foxconn facility it was assembled at, if you're unwilling to follow the link to input your entire serial. Make your exchange ASAP if you're having a defective iPad.

Some others are saying heat issues may subside after running 2-3 charge cycles running the battery from 100%-0%. If problems persists, contact the retailer or Apple's toll free hotline.
