I purchased a movie on iTunes but it does not appear under "Purchased Movies" on Apple TV. TV shows I purchased are available. Another post suggests that only TV shows can be viewed on Apple TV. Any suggestions or explanations?

That's not true. My ATV (latest version) displays movies that I purchased on my iPad.
Is your ATV communicating with the Internet? Edit... It's gotta be. You can see TV shows. Hmmm... Honestly, I'm clueless. Sorry.
That particular movie may not be eligible for iTunes in the Cloud. Go to your past purchases, in iTunes, and see if it is availble for re-download. It it isn't, then you won't see it under Purchased on the ATV.
