Your Apple TV can only see movies available in the resolution set in its settings. (ie, if a movie is only available in SD and your Apple TV is looking for HD, it won't find anything)
I was looking for The Help. It is on sale in SD and HD versions.
I found 'The Help' after just typing 'T' into the search on the Apple TV, it was 4th in the list.
Not me. And I don't understand why.
Unfortunately, I do not understand why either. Are you logged into the same iTunes Store on the Apple TV, as you are using to look up the movie on iTunes on your computer.
As you use the term film and not movie, I am assuming that you are in the UK, as I am.
Yes. Everything is OK with iTunes store etc.
I am experienced with Apples. I work with them the last 33 years. But not with Apple TV. These are my first 3 hours.
Trying with other titles, everything works fine. And I am in Greece. Film or movie rings the same for me.
Are you using the Greek iTunes Store for searching on the Apple TV and for searching in iTunes on your computer.
FWIW, I just looked for J. Edgar.
On the Mac, I can rent or purchase only in SD.
On the Apple TV, I can rent or purchase only in HD.
On the iPad, I can rent SD or HD but I can purchase only SD.
If I rent or purchase SD on the iPad, I can stream via AirPlay to the Apple TV.
I didn't check my iPod as I'm getting a headache!
By the way, I'm in the U.S.A.
Edit...
I just checked The Help. All four combinations (buy/rent/SD/HD) are possible both on the Mac and on the iPad. My headache is getting worse.

I have the latest version of the ATV and the resolution is set for "Auto." SOME movies are available only in HD while others are available only in SD. The "SD-only" movies that I've found thus far are the old movies that simply do not exist in HD. I have not yet found movies that are available in both SD and HD on the ATV which is, of course, different than the situation with the Mac and the iPad. Apparently whatever is available on each device is unique for each individual title.
Are you looking at the correct settings, I am referring to settings > iTunes Store > video resolution. I have the new Apple TV and there is no auto setting on mine.
You are correct. I was in the wrong Settings location. It's a bit after midnight where i am. I'm going to sleep now.
For what it's worth, the iTunes Store settings were previously set to 1080. I have since changed them to 720.
