Pretty easy,

1: Create a folder on the Desktop area, click Finder > New folder

2: Open iPhoto (some versions let you drag off a picture copy and drop into the Desktop folder) or export a section to the the new folder on the Desktop

3: Finder > Get Info on the size of the New Folder, a cd holds 700MB and a standard DVD 4.7GB a Dual layer DVD 8.5GB, but always go a bit less.

4: Right click on the new folder and click burn to disk

Could be you can create a custom album in iPhoto, drag copies of photo's you want into it and burn just that album from within the program.

Many ways to do it, the first method I outlined is good for any files regardless of program (except audio disks and you need iTunes for that, or dvd movies and you need iDVD or similar for that)
