Anyone testing with the D800?

Just took delivery of mine, and shot some photos in RAW. Opened fine in Aperture. Stamping of adjustments slower than expected, but other things might be going on to impact that other than the large file size.

An oddity is that in the Finder the CF card in FW reader is identified as No Name volume. The SD card in USB reader is identified as D800 volume.

Have not yet experimented with video.

Lucky so-n-so...

I've been playing with a couple I got off getDPI and actually I was rather surprised at how responsive they are. Looks like macbookPro i7 is up to the task. Import, loading, brushes and such all seems fine to me. I only have 2 files so I can only stamp one, but that didn't seem particularly slow. Not much different than my puny d90 files really.

The raw files are verrryyy impressive indeed. I'll def be getting either the 800 or 800E. Just have to wait and see what the real world difference is as reported by actual photographers.

Here's what I don't like about the files: 12 bit (14 not available to me) NEFs create a whopping 206MB tiff when I send 16 bit to PTLens. If I send 8 bit I get a more reasonable 46MB. I do a lot of architectural interiors and straight lines are a must, so most of my work gets a trip thru PTLens. Saving the large tiff from the plugin back to aperture is very slow, as expected.

Here's hoping that Ap4 arrives soon with the tools I need to do this kind of correction on the raw. It's a slightly different take on the 'OMG the files are so huge' concerns you usually see. In fact, if 4 can't do this I might be tempted to make the switch just for not having to wait for the tiff files to save.

Have fun getting to know the new machine!

I have ordered the D800E,and use Aperture3.2.3 for all of my photo management. I downloaded NEF files from both the D800 and D800E. The Camera RAW 3.1.1 update enabled Aperture to open the D800 NEF files but not the D800E NEF files. Will Apple be updating Camera RAW again to include the D800? According to Nikon, the NEF files are identical from both cameras. I suspect that ApertureiPhoto don't open the D800E files because the D800E in the file data is not reco0gnized.

I am also curious about import/export times with D800 files.

How long does it take to import 100 lossless compressed NEF files? And one what kind of machine and import device? Are there FW or Thunderbolt card readers available?

How long does it take to export to JPEG format those same 100 files?

I have a 16GB RAM 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 with SSD.

Thanks

I have not been ignoring your test results -- just no time to conduct some similar tests. I have watched memory management closely since using the D800 -- OSX and Aperture in concert results in a growth of Inactive memory to the point that Free memory becomes almost nill if enough images are processed continuously. It seems that the Inactive memory will then only be released in small amounts when absolutely needed. I also have watched as the conversion takes greater amounts of memory, and then falls back as each one is written to the receiving folder. I think this use of memory impacts these times greatly.

I had not recently noticed this memory behavior with images from shoots with my D300, so I cannot say whether it is simply the greater size of files in various formats when exporting, or something new. The test I want to make includes exporting a set of Masters vs a set of versions where conversion to JPEG and limiting the max pixel dimension is involved. I find myself unwilling yet to export to my SmugMug galleries at larger than the full size produced by my D300 which I continue to use as well. My uploads limited to 4288 x 4288 are working well, and I cannot say whether there is any perception of improvement of those at relatively high ISO from what I see in Aperture or not. When I zoom in and show actual pixels of exported files in Photoshop, the results hold up really well. My must familar and frequent venue is not causing higher ISO levels to be used from those used by the D300 in most cases. The time to upload is mixed in my case to the time needed to convert to JPEG format.

Impport time is totally dependent on the quality of memory card and reader. I use a Firewire 800 reader for my CF cards, and most of the time a new Sandisk Extreme Pro class 10, 600x read/write speed card, which is faster than what I have been using with the D300. The SDHC UHS-1 card (633x) in a simple Promaster USB reader is also very fast. I am not noticing import speed differences, but have not analyzed.

Had a sudden flash of insight today. I have always set my Previews to be half the size of the original, but now with the pixel dimensions produced by the D800, such Previews are nearly as large as the originals from my D300. I think some issues I have been watching are due to these oversize Previews that have resulted from the half size setting. I now have changed to 2560 x 2560, which probably is still larger than really needed. I will now observe procesing the photos from a shoot with the smaller Previews.

I have the best MacBook Pro available (2.5 Quad i7, 8GB RAM and an SSD-HD)

My preview settings are: Fit withing 2560x2560 and Q10

My findings:

- moving from one image to the next, it takes 1 to 2 seconds before the loading of the preview is done, with D700 you wouldn't notice it

- comparing 3 images in 100% view to compare sharpness is impossible. One image remains sharp, the other two alternate in becoming sharp (hte oter shows Loading...).

- processing a bunch of Adjustments takes ages: a few retouches and a few levels brushed in and I can go for a coffee with whatever next step

- Exporting takes double the time as with D700 images (maybe this is normal, double size = double time)

I just tested the comparison of 3 images, and all three loaded, and stayed loaded, whether in Strip View, Monitor View or Full Screen. My Preview is as before, except I changed to Q10 from 8 to match your test.

There are still use of memory issues, which I believe are made worse by the size of files from the D800, but the impact does not show until a large number of images have been processed for adjustment in one session.

Export time will directly relate to size of file, but may differ for each computer. My export times do not seem excessiive. For example, I uploaded 32 images to a SmugMug gallery this morning, set to size within 4288 x 4288 at JPEG 10, and left the computer to do a quick task. Came back the upload had taken place rather quickly. I think conversion to JPEG and size can be almost as limiting as the upload speed, but didn't set there watching.

I would be curious about how long, say 10, Masters might take to export for you, vs 10 Versions?

Testing of the D800

System

16 GB 60MB/s SanDisk Extreme

Calumet USB 2.0 Card reader

Western Digital 1TB USB 2.0 Passport drive

Western Digital 6TB thunderbolt drive

Computer 27” iMac with 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB RAM, Lion 10.7.3 and Aperture 3.2.3, Video RAM-AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB

100 pictures taken with a D800 14 bit Lossless compressed RAW

Import

Card to USB 2.0 passport drive import into Aperture Library – 5:00.1 minutes

Card to USB 2.0 passport drive drag and drop folder – 6:28.7 minutes

Card to 6TB Thunderbolt drive import into Aperture Library-3:09.7 minutes

Card to 6TB Thunderbolt drive drag and drop folder – 3:00.7 minutes

Export (100 pictures)

USB 2.0 to USB 2.0—full size—5:44.6 minutes

USB 2.0 to USB 2.0—4256x4256—5:22.8 minutes—this is size of D700 file (D700 export of 100 pictures was 3:01.7 minutes)

USB 2.0 to Thunderbolt —4256x4256—5:03.9 minutes

Thunderbolt library to Thunderbolt folder —full size—3:47.5 minutes

Thunderbolt library to Thunderbolt folder —4256x4256—3:58.4 minutes –(D700 export 1:57.5 minutes)

Thunderbolt library to Thunderbolt folder – relocation of masters-0:21.5 minutes

My conclusions

  1. Moving D800 files around (import or export) will be workable
  2. By moving to a Thunderbolt drive, D800 file size slow down will be reduced to be similar to the D700 on USB drives
  3. Size of export file does not seem to make much difference
  4. I was surprized at the better performance going to the thunderbolt drive as I had assumed the USB 2.0 card reader would be limiting and will it may be, there is enough extra performance the the thunderbolt drive will be beneficial.
