Not sure what my wife did but I have a copy bar that states Downloading untitled download to downloads. There is a bar indicating something is happening. There is an x next to it to stop it but it will not stop. I tried to shut down my computer but it will not let me as there is something running. Is there a way to force quit like in windows with controle alt delete?

Apple menu --> Force Quit --> select the process you want to kill in the Force Quit window.
You can directly bring up the Force Quit window by pressing the command + option + escape keys.
then select and Force Quit any unresponsive app or app's.
First, quit (normally) all applications after saving any files that were open. One of those applications might not allow you to quit in the normal fashion, but that will be fixed in the next step. Next, under the Apple menu in the upper left portion of your screen, select Force quit ...
You will see some applications listed, or maybe just one or two. Force quit them all except for the Finder. Leave the Finder alone. Then try to shut down your computer after doing Force Quit on all applications except the finder.

I am having the same problem as Comovartia. It's nice of people to try to help but I don't think any of you understood the question. He's not asking how to Force Quit. He's asking how to stop the Download function. In my case it has been operating continuously all afternoon. There's no way to Force Quit it because it doesn't appear in the Force Quit applications list.
My mistake apparently was selecting multiple files from an ftp site to download at once. I clicked on the X next to each file to stop the Download process, but it will not stop.
So the question is not how to Force Quit. The question is how to get the Download to stop.
Try quitting Finder. Then re-launch it.

Isn't the download function part of an application, normally a browser (or in the case you mention maybe an FTP client)?
In that case you force quit the application involved.
In addition to the methods mentioned you can also use Activity Monitor and the dock (click and hold on application - first go may say Quit, second will say Force Quit).
