It can output 5.1 using the optical output (reference).
Hi,hope so , as i contacted a couple of authorized apple reseller , however they were unsure about this . They said it supports only 2.1 channel audio through the 3.5 audio jack. .
Only some said it might work succesfully though the mini display to HDMI cable .
Don't know if the 5x70 video cards supports 5.1 audio via an HDMI adapter connected to the mini-displayports.
...on the other hand I just found this...
Kanex iAdapt 51 Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter with 5.1 Channel Digital Audio
hi , thanks .it looks good . well, i'll ask someone from apple , if they can assure this , before I make a purchase.this should work even in 7.2 channel as well .
Both the apple doc I referenced and the Kanex adapter at OWC only mention 5.1. But I wonder if you combine 5.1 optical with the 2-channel analog audio is that good enough for 7.1? If so, there you go!
Check out some of the hits when googling "7.1 sound from mac pro".
the reference you mentioned shows optical connectivity , do not think so , the optical connectivity jack is available on the imac desktop . i think it is present only on the mac pro(cpu like box).
Oops, sorry, forgot where I was. I have a mac pro. For the imac I guess you would be out of luck for 7.1 but the Kanex adapter is still good for the 5.1 on an imac.
i think so too the kanex adaptor is a good option , well I have not bought the system yet , i am planning to . but lets see now , since it does not have the connectivity to the amp , if I go for it . but thanks anyways for the answers.if i get a solution to this , will let you know .
Ok.
