How can i set a task/reminder from an email?

Hi all, I have a 64gb iPad 2 running iOS 5.1 which work have supplied me with, I'm an apple n00b but am quite experienced with Windows. My mail is synchronised with the office server and I can access that on my Windows laptop or my iPad.

When I receive a new email that I need to either reply to or perform an action in order for it to be considered complete (ie not just a FYI email that I can file away), I can set this email as a to-do task in Windows, set a coloured reminder to the email, flag the email with a reminder to pop onto my screen etc at a later date - ie loads of ways to highlight to me that this needs to be actually actioned but there doesn't seem to be any way of doing anything with the embedded email program other than mark it as unread.

At the moment I'm resorting to creating a subfolder called "To do" and manually moving these emails there for the minute but setting a reminder or task, which I've had the ability to set on Windows Outlook since the 90's, seems impossible on the iPad. Other than this my only options seem to be marking the email as unread or going to the reminders app myself and type a 'manual' reminder referencing this email.

Is there any way, or app, that I can either create a reminder/task straight to reminders from the email or, at the very least, do something to differentiate it from the rest of the emails in my inbox (even highlighting it in a colour would do)?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer,

Matt

I'm still in quest of the perfect option -

But take a closer look at iCal for making event alarms, as they alert your phone any number of times,

if sync is functional.

Another option, but no alarms, EverNote. I'm new to the App, but I like it from iPad/iPhone/computer.

This App syncs, and can be acessed by any device unless device w/10.4.11, it does not.

Good luck

You can mark emails in iOS as Flagged, which solves about 5% of your problem, but you can't do any of those other Outlook-y things, I'm afraid.

You need 3rd party software. I've done this with Toodledo, which is an online web task manager with a very nice iPad app. You forward the email to Toodledo and the iPad app picks it up. There's also a Windows utility that syncs Outlook tasks to Toodledo, so you can hook everything up that way.

There may be other ways to do this as well ...

This is an extremely vexing problem and I would like to know if anyone has a solution please. Here is my situation:

Using standalone (simply my home one not connected to network or exchange) Outlook 2007 (soon to upgrade to 2013) on PC - Windows 8.1. Have an iPhone 6. Want the closest possible functionality (particularly categories, reminders, etc.) on my iPhone for my standalone Outlook. The only thing I have found close is DejaOffice and Companion Link (which work together). I am seriously considering as appears a close mirror image for all things I do, but they don't have email. So, can someone please give me either a) a better comprehensive application/solution; b) a separate 3rd party email app that will allow me to flag an email, on either computer or iPhone with perfect sync, as a reminder without having to create a separate task; or c) your best/closest solution set to be as seamlessly productive as possible using either native or 3rd party email app and your :"manual workaround." Thanks.

I have a solution of sorts:

  1. You can "drag and drop" flagged emails into the Tasks folder and it will "copy" the message there. It will also create a "copy" in the To-Do section as well...don't know why but bear with me.
  2. If you complete a task in the Reminder app and click the circle to close it.....it will close it in both the Reminders List, the Task list on Outlook as well as the "copy" in the Outlook To-Do list.

The one thing this does not do is close the original flagged item in the Outlook To-Do list BUT it does make your tasks visible in Reminders to track items both places. Microsoft seems to treat To-Do list items as something related to an email and Tasks as manually input list items......the seem them as separate functions and therefore separate lists.

Something else interesting you can do:

"Drag and drop" a flagged item into the Task folder and delete or complete the item in the To-Do list immediately. This will keep the item in the new folder in Outlook Tasks AND in the Reminders on your devices. Once the items is closed on either device or from the Outlook Tasks list it removes the item as a closed item. The only thing this will not help with is that it will show the items closed on the email list and not a flagged item unless you choose to close it later like the solution above.

Until Outlook implements an internal function, "work-arrounds" are the best we will be able to do. So, the more users report feedback to Microsoft for this the sooner we will have another great function.

In Outlook, dragging an e-mail into any Task folder as a way to automatically create a task is a trick that has worked for years, back to at least version 2007 I think. It also works for creating Appointments (just drag the task into a Calendar folder), though like with tasks you still have to set the dates and times on the item.

I think the OP was asking about how to do this directly in iOS, though, which I still haven't found a way to do. (And by directly, I mean without involving other apps). If it were up to me, I would be able to open an email in the iOS email app, and at the bottom there would be a "Share" icon for reminders. Or if it would be similar, pressing the Flag icon or the Forward icon would include "Create Reminder" in its popup menu.

There is a shortcut. It is described at this link:

http://www.cnet.com/how-to/add-an-e-mail-to-the-os-x-reminders-app-for-easy-foll ow-up/

Basically, if you have OS X Reminders in the dock, you can drag an email directly from OS X Mail onto the icon of the Reminders app, and it will create a reminder for you. Moving it around to the proper folder within reminders comes later.
