You cannot email to groups with the built in mail app, you need a third party app.
Look at Mail Shot or Group Email in the app store for mail apps that provide that functionality.

It can be done in OS X with Mail and Address Book applications:

If you don't want to buy a third party app, and I don't know why Apple doesn't simply have group distribution built into contacts, but the don't seem to at this point you can create a DIY a group listing you can do it in NotePad on the iPhone itself, or on your computer using any plain text editor.
1. Create a list of email addresses in the text editor
2. Separate each address from the next one using a comma (You can't do this on the iPhone which is why you need to do it in another app)
eg: email1.@email.com, email2@email.com, etc. etc.
3. Select the list of names and copy it (Assuming you are doing this in iPhone NotePad)
4. Go into contacts on your phone
5. Create a new contact, name it in the Business Name field
6. Paste the list of names into he email address field
7. Save the new cintact
8. Go into your mail app and create a new email and in the address field enter the new group name
9. The Group name should appear on the To address line
10. Type your email address and send.
Re-visiting this thread, with the same issue as the OP, only for iPhone...
When I follow the instructions exactly by Thom_D above, it works, except that it gives me an ERROR message saying that the emails won't go through because the address is malformed, but then they go through. Any way of avoiding this error message?
Brilliant! ty
and no errors
Thanks Thom_D!
I found a good way to create an error free list is to start writing a new email. Add all of the adressees in the To field by selecting them from your Contacts. When you're done, select the whole field and copy it. You can then paste this as the email adress of your new group in Contacts.
