Q: I'm NEW!  How do you save downloaded software to

the hard drive of your mac?

This has me totally perplexed.

I downloaded some software and it is in my downloads.  I clicked on it expecting it to ask if I wanted it to run or be saved, but neither happened.

I can find the software in my downloads folder, but I need to save it specifically onto my (internal) hard drive.  HOW?

This may be obvious to most, but I'm learning life the hard way!

Thanks much!

Your downloads folder is on your internal drive.

Your downloads folder is on your hard drive.  But if you want the application, say, in /Applications, move it out of your Downloads folder into the /Applications folder.

Ok this is what you do, open the .DMG file in your downloads folder, if it is an application it will either have an installer or prompt you to drag the actual app to your applications folder, if it doesnt this means you are automatically ment to drag it to your applications folder, once the app is fully put into the applications folder, it is on your internal harddrive until you delete it. its not like windows where you have to go through a lot of crap before you can save an app, this is simple and straight forward. Hope this helps.

    Hi Linc,

It's not a file, it's a software program.  But I think I got the answer further down.  Thx!

    Hi Csound1

I am aware that my downloaded files are on my hard drive.  But with a software application, being in my downloads folder does not mean that the software program itself is on the hard drive.

    I think, that is.

Thx though - I think I was given my answer!

    Hi X423424X

I think that putting it into the Apps folder does solve the problem, I think.

    I don't know why, I don't understand this jazz....

But thank you for your answer!

    Hi AplleSupport2011,

Hi – Thank you very much for this help!  What you said does help a lot, but I still have a confusion.  When I did what you said, of opening the dmg file, it opens with a screen that says this:  (And this is where I lose it right off the bat.)

    Carbon Copy Cloner

    3 items

Before you begin using Carbon Copy Cloner, please copy it to your hard drive.

This is exactly how it looks.   So I don’t know what to do 1st?  Can you please tell me again.  I probably should’ve shown this in my 1st question.   Thank you - thank you - thank you!

Drag the Carbon Copy App to the  Applications folder icon, it will automatically go into your applications folder then, which will be permanantly on your hardrive until you remove it yourself. Thanks.

    Thanks but.............

Where you say to drag the CCC to the Apps folder, do you mean THIS apps folder, the one that appears in CCC's message or my real App's folder?

And what do I do with that read me icon and the apps folder - the one in CCC's message?

I'm sorry I'm being such a blockhead here, but thank you for your help!

Hi its me again, just on my proper account.

Yes i mean the Applications folder the one that appears in the message, its a shortcut folder to your real apps folder, they are essentially the same thing, you can drag it to either of them ultimatly it will end up in the same place, in your applicatios folder on your hardrive.

The readme icon is usually just licence information on the app your putting on your computer you do not need to keep it once you have put the CCC app in your applications folder you can close the dialogue box and eject the virtual harddisc that will probably appear on your desktop. You can do this by dragging it down to the trash icon on your dock, which will as you get closer turn into an eject button.

    Hope this helps.

    Kind regards
