MacBook Pro 15" (15-inch Core 2 Duo) late 2006

this apple macbook boot lion from usb or firewire ext hdd or usb stick which of 3 better must boot Lion on ext device? or none at all?

mb may boot from all three, provided that they are formatted HFS+ and partition table is GUID. You may run Lion or any other Mac OS from an external drive at a reasonably good speed.

FireWire is the fastest, and the best, of the choices that were given.

    Firewire fastest

    USB disk is next best

USB stick will be slowest, unless it is a very VERY fast USB stick.  Nothing I've tried has been all that fast.

you say "provided that they are formatted HFS+ and partition table is GUID", well,

if buy an ext firewire800 hdd and use the Apple usb stick installer Lion to install Lion, the above are done automatically by default?

  • Cattus Thraex Level 4 Level 4

No, that is why I stressed it. When formatting with Disk Utility, before choosing the format, go to Options, and select GUID first, then Mac OS Extended Journaled. It is default from now on, the partition table is left ‘as is’, if not changed later.

It may be GUID if the disk is targeted at mac users by the manufacturer, which is quite rare. Conversely, if the disk is targeted at frequent exchange with PC Users, the partition table should be Master Boot REcord (MBR) and formatted as FAT or NTFS.

you mean I must be formatting with Disk Utility of my macbook pro and after use Apple usb stick installer Lion to install Lion in the firewire 800...? if find a mac ext firewire800 hdd this may skipped... how understand to get skip this?

  • Cattus Thraex Level 4 Level 4

I do not understand your phrasing, mainly I do not understand ‘and after use Apple usb stick installer Lion to install Lion in the firewire 800...?’.

Let me repeat: in order to install and run Mac OS X, any, from an external drive, that drive must be formatted 1. HFS+ and 2. must have GUID partition map. I do not know what was skipped or not, I told you to check this by getting info of the drive, as indicated. If both conditions are not fulfilled, you must reformat the drive.

I want to use Apple usb stick installer Lion stick that apple sells to install Lion in the firewire 800 hdd,

you mean I must be formatting with/using Disk Utility of my macbook pro and after use Apple usb stick installer Lion to install Lion on the firewire 800...? if find a mac ext firewire800 hdd(that is preconfigured for mac) this may skipped... how understand to get skip this?

You don't need to buy a pre-configured Mac External Drive. They are usually more expensive. Just buy one and then open DiskUtility from the Utilities folder in Applications and reformat the drive to GUID and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) There is also an option to partition the drive if you only want to install Lion on a part of the drive and use the rest of the drive for something else.

Yes, any Mac OS boots from any external drive, with the note that older PPC macs must have firewire connection for this, intel macs may have any, USB or firewire.

In my experience, Windows and Linux cannot normally boot from an external device, unless you are an expert and make some special preparations for this.

"you are an expert and make some special preparations for this."

If I am intermediate user where find steps to try this?

  • Cattus Thraex Level 4 Level 4

Try to ask in similar Linux and Windows forums.
