Will Final Cut Pro retain the HD output of my Sony HD Camcorder? ( I believe that iMovie output quality is poor)

Does Final Cut edit instantly or is it slow to "work" the changes. I used Pinnacle Studio (PC) but found it extremely slow.

For me, it's extremely quick but I've never used Pinnacle Studio so I can't compare it. Of course, processor power and RAM etc play a large part.
