Jul 21, 2014 4:48 AM in response to atyreeby kubajz896,Mx problem with 3 unread mails in Gmail app was solved by deleting 3 old conversations from Hangouts. I found them while logged in Gmail on MacBook Safari and typing "is:unread" without quotes.
Thanks for clues, hope it helps

Oct 19, 2014 2:40 PM in response to atyreeby Eventsportsmedia,After much aggro I've sorted the issue. My iPhone was showing 50 mails unread but when I went to inbox or separate Unread there was no trace of the 50. I tried the various solutions offered on here but finally one thing worked:
I deleted the account in 'Settings'.
Then added the same account I'd just deleted.
When first reopened it downloaded 95 new emails (all of which I'd previously deleted but clearly there was a trace left of them somewhere albeit goodness knows where!)
I then pressed 'Edit' and one-by-one checked on each email.
Eventually after checking on all 95 I pressed 'Trash"
They went and so did the 50 tag on my email icon that had been bugging me and frustrating me for hours.
It's a long haul but i hope it works for anyone suffering this issue.
Aside, i used to have a Blackberry. You could delete all simply by highlighting them all in one foul swoop. People used to tell me BB for business users, Apple for people who like playing with toys. Now I understand what they meant!
Come on Apple. Not being able to delete 100's emails in one go is ridiculous. Sort it please. I'm sure there are many like me who get lots and lots of emails.

Jul 28, 2015 12:48 AM in response to atyreeby Sweetestmiami, tthe same thing happen to me. i have my icloud and Gmail linked to the iPhone Mail app. No matter what I did, I couldn't get rid of those 5,000 mails I have so what I did was I got on my laptop and sign into my gmail. As I was erasing my nails, I notice three tabs above my email. First tab say "primary" and second tab say "social" and third say "update". When I clicked on those tabs I realize I have much more emails than I thought I did. I went back on the iPhone mail app and realize that iphone mail app only show you the primary emailS. It shows that you have unread mails but it doesn't show you the other two tabs. To test this discovery, I erase mails from my other two tabs, social and updates, I can see the red number notification decreasing on my iPhone. I decided to check out the gmail app for iPhone and realize that it shows me all my mails: social, primary, updates, etc. hope this help!

Aug 11, 2015 11:37 AM in response to atyreeby Vackyme,Hi guys,
I had the same issue a while back and also tried switching off mail in the apps.
It didn't work for me. What did was simply turning off the unread folder in the mailbox.
THis may not work for everybody but worth a shot, eh?

Sep 23, 2015 3:29 PM in response to atyreeby williamus,
Just one email showing as unread in Hotmail but none in the other 5 accounts of overall "unread". PC shows no emails unread, neither does spare iPhone. I tried various solutions suggested here but in the end I deleted the account and re-added it. Problem solved. Cheers -
