I've read that AppleTV 2 allows viewing of ABC's (Australia) i-view content but can't get it to work. I think you can do it with an ipad or iphone - I'm trying to use a Macbook Pro. Any suggestions?

That's not currently possible, only iTunes content can be streamed from a computer to the Apple TV.
Channels and streaming require apps.
At present there are very few apps running on an ATV (for example YouTube, Netflix, MBA etc).
I expect this will change down the road.
For now it's not possible directly on the ATV, although some apps that run on an iPad that are airtunes enabled can share to the ATV.
