New iPad battery drain

Hi guys,

Yesterday I've charged my iPad 3 for the first time (100% + extra hours). I unplugged it before I went to bed.

Just now (9 hours later) I picked it up and I noticed it's already at 90%. That's 10% for standby without loaded apps as the thing was down to 0% (shutdown) before I started charging.

I don't see that happening on my iPad 1 (same apps running) and phone. Is this normal?

Yes, there might be an update to fix that issue (iOS 5.1.1)

I couldn't say for sure if the same procedure is going to help in your instance or not. One thing you might check is to look on your iPhone under General>Usage and then look at the numbers listed under "Time Since Last Full Charge". If the numbers are the same then it means your phone is still reporting that it's in use even when it's placed into standby, and you know then that a restore back to factory settings should eliminate the bug. Your iPad doesn't report those numbers, but if you wanted to check it as well then you could go to an Apple Store and they could plug it into their diagnostic software which will report those numbers on the iPad. Hope that helps.

I bumped into this thread when experiencing battery drain during standby on my 2 weeks iPad 3. Thanks to eph411 which provided information in this post. I did the exact step by step and solved the issue. After reinstallation as new device, I charged till 100%, completed on Sunday evening around 11PM and now Tuesday 10.30PM battery level is 51%. I followed some extra battery saving tricks such as turn off WiFI and 3G when unused, disabled PING and other notification and brightness 50%. Not using it heavily, just email checking, replying, calendaring, casual browsing, SEGA virtual tennis games and note taking. Verry happy with the result as not only the battery is stay longer but also I noticed my iPad temperature is also lower than before. It's still warmer compared to previous iPad 2, but far from overheat. Thanks again.

I had the same problem after I get my iPad2 restored from an iPad backup and then update to iOS6. And it reappears when I restore the backup of the ipad2 to a brand new ipad4.

I tried a lot to figure out what's wrong. But all I know is that it could be properly set to stanby if I turn off wifi. Other than that, reset network settings and all settings didn't help.

Eph411's idea looks really promising. But it would be too much a pain to lose all my messages and unmigratable app profiles.

So I followed another lead, said it might be related to a sync conflict problem of iCloud's Address book.

I hava two ipad and an iphone. Right after I decided to look at the addressbook, I found that there is a mismatch of the amount numbers. Then I did an item-by-item comparison between them, turn off icloud sync and delete any conflicted ones, and then turn it on. And then, voila! Everything's back to normal!

And for anyone who's also scared by the idea of 'start fresh', you have to try this first.

Again, please kindly pardon my English. Reply me if anyone wants more details.

Thanks to all of you guys who's been answering questions here.

WHAT WORKED FOR ME

DELETE FACEBOOK APP

I have had my iPad for over a year and always had great battery life but suddenly the battery started draining when not in use. To check how quickly it was doing this I charged it fully and then didn't touch it for two days - when I turned it on it had drained to 3%

I have the Wifi version.

I also always set my data to FETCH MANUALLY not PUSH

But it seems that when I did the most recent update of Facebook it changed my settings to PUSH so no wonder the battery was dying- Facebook was constantly active.

I deleted the FACEBOOK APP and reset my info to be fetched by me and my problem seems to be solved. When I open it I have the same battery % as when I closed it the night before.

If I want to use FB I can get there through safari.

Hello,

I am currently an owner of an Ipod Touch 4th generation. I see you are having problems with your Ipod Touch/Ipad/Iphone/Ipod Classic, so I will try to find a solution to your problem.🙂

  1. Do the IOS update (the one that is the latest)
  2. Reset All Settings: SETTINGS>GENERAL>RESET>RESET ALL SETTINGS
  3. Use it until it dies (automatically shuts off)
  4. Plug into Charge
  5. Leave it 1.5 hours or longer after it reaches 100% --> Undisturbed (preferably overnight)
  6. Give it a few days to Calibrate

This has helped me on my Ipod Touch 4th generation, running IOS 6.0.1

Hope that helps!

If none of the above solutions work, can you please respond back ASAP as I will try to find another solution to your problem (This might even help others with the same problem!)

Cheers!

Hey everyone,

I had the "-10% battery loss per night on standby" problem on my 3rd generation iPad aswell and wanted to share my experience about it.

I shut down the programs when I didn't use them, but it didn't solve the issue. And when everything was still working ok on my iPad I didn't need to turn anything off. Battery loss was like 1% maybe 2% per night with all the programs running in the background + mobile internet on. So I knew the problem wasn't about how I used the device. I tried to hard reset the device (pressing both buttons on it until the apple logo appears) and then loaded the battery to the max. After that the battery % was stuck to 100% for about 2 hours until it started dropping. This didn't solve the issue.

The next day I went to my local apple store and asked if they could look upon it. Their battery analyzer test showed that there was no problem with the battery itself so they told me to try resetting it to the factory defaults. They instructed me to use the function from the settings menu, "Erase all content and settings".

So then I erased all content and settings. I didn't restore it from the backup after that since I wanted to see if it was some of my installed software that was causing the issue. After that the battery drained 1-2% per hour with wi-fi and mobile internet on and 1% per 2 hours with all network turned off.

I took it back to the store. There was a different fella in the maintenance counter and he told me that I should have done the reset through iTunes somehow, but since I was already falsely instructed he took the device in.

Today I got a call from the store and they said that "It's still dropping 4% per night, we'll order you a new product". I dunno if they tried resetting it through the iTunes or not, but perhaps I'll ask about it when I visit them.

I dunno if this was helpful at all, but I found reading the tips from this thread useful and wanted to contribute with my own story aswell 🙂.

PS. I didn't want to experiment all the tips from this thread at first since I knew I had some warranty left on my device.

I didn't do the method eph411 recomended, as my draining problem lay somewhere else, I however noticed my drain, and I mean a fully drain, as I had recharded my iPad just 1 day ago, and today it again was discharged to just under 1 percent (as the iPad didn't even display the battery empty icon when trying to boot up).

So, I went looking and noticed I had left Safari open the day before, which was in the process of updating/syncing the reading list and bookmarks, now this might not be a problem when on WiFi, but my wifi-network was as it turned out not turned on.

So I went into Settings> Cellular Data> Use Cellular for:

Reading list, which was turned on, now iCloud documents, iTunes and FaceTime over 3G/4G is, mostly, not a problem but with reading list turned on, is.

So to everyone, check what you want/have enabled over 3G/4G/LTE. This combined with setting email on fetch or manual should improve battery life. Then onto my iPhone which for the last few weeks has been using HUGE amount of batterylife when listening to streaming radio over the internet, I take my iPhone 5 to work at a place where 3G-signal is low, now what I've discoverd is that when using your iOS device on a weak 3G/4G signal (as is the case in the area I work) with a low download speed, your iPhone/iPad will use more battery to maintain connectivety. In areas where the signalstrength is good and you have a moderatly high download speed, it uses less battery. So If you listen to streaming internet radio, my advise is to do so in areas where there's a good signal. I frequently used up all my battery life on my iPhone, after just 3 hours of continual audio streaming over 3G.
