Q: New iPad battery drain

Hi guys,

Yesterday I've charged my iPad 3 for the first time (100% + extra hours). I unplugged it before I went to bed.

Just now (9 hours later) I picked it up and I noticed it's already at 90%. That's 10% for standby without loaded apps as the thing was down to 0% (shutdown) before I started charging.

I don't see that happening on my iPad 1 (same apps running) and phone. Is this normal?

iPad, iOS 5.1, new ipad

If you're not losing battery during standby then you're not having the problem that myself and others have encountered. Our problem has been that when the device is left unplugged overnight it is losing 10% or more battery, even though it's in standby and not in use. So again, if you're not losing battery during standby then your device would seem to be performing as it should.

Just took my new iPad (I ordered it in advanced, and received it on the first day they were available) in to the genius bar to assess battery drainage problem.  They did the software analytics, and found that components of the software were corrupt.  Restored software to NEW iPad vs. last backup, and now it is performing very well - only lost 1% in the first hour of use vs. the 30% I was losing before.

Me, too... setting up as new was a PITA, but seems to have fixed the problem. 1% drain overnight vs about 10% before. Thanks eph411!

Yes, there is an issue with battery drain in new ipad. It looks disabling icloud helps! Now I have 1% battery usage a day when not in use, before 70% for 36 hours, Apple please sort it quick! Icloud feature which should work is not usable at the moment...

I had the battery drain problem, but I also had a pink tinge to my screen, after enjoying a totally trouble free ipad1 I was really dissapointed with my new ipad 3. Tried reset with itunes and for a day or two OK, then back to problems. In desperation trailed over to far off Apple store where they agrred about the pink screen, but as I'd bought it directly from Apple would only give me a 'brown' box ipad 3 ?? So far pleased with new ipad although not sure if the battery is as long lived as my ipad1. Pink problem seems to have gone JOY. Dont suffer, its a very expensive toy !

GOOD RESULTS and it looks like it fixed the STANDBY battery usage issue. yay!

Did not want to go on DFY mode and did not want to return the new iPad either as I have already spent money on the clear Bodyguardz Ultra Tough Clear Skins full body (which is highly recommended by the way).

I finally tried one of you guys' recommendation (can't remember who since there are so many who gave their awesome inputs) and that is: draining my new iPad to zero battery charge - (let it die for about 10-15 minutes), the charged it for at least 48 hours straight - yes leaving me with no iPad but no biggie, I used my iPhone 4S for the meantime. Here are the results:

    1) I noticed I don't lose any charge overnight - went to bed with it at 100%, woke up and it is still 100% charged, whereas before, I noticed it has gone down to 94-95%. This means that my new iPad is proven to go on STANDBY mode.

    2) Now, everytime I close my cover and open it again a few hours later, it stayed at the the last charged percentage -- which means, again, it goes on STANDBY and no sign of usage. To play safe now, I just close all the apps before I go to bed at night -- but even if I don't close the previously used apps during the day time, I noticed it still does not lose a charge.

Now, I still noticed when I am using, it uses up the battery fast and to me that is expected because of the fast processor and the 4G functionality that was explained at an earlier thread on this thread and also by Apple in a discussion I read.

Thanks for all your input. Let's keep sharing on the work around for new iPad's quick battery drainage.

Thanks eph411. I just posted a reply on another thread and shared the results of what you have recommended. I drained it to the fullest - till it blacks out, left it dead for about 10-15 mins. then charged it at least 48 hours (suffice it to say I have not iPad for at least 48 hrs but no biggie - I have my "mini iPad" -- my iPhone 4S. It fixed the drainage on standby. I don't lose 10% anymore when I leave it at 100% (or any %) at night; it stays the same as when I left it the night before.

Still experiencing quick battery drainage when using but that is expected because of the fast processor and the 4G technology.

By the way, I took it to the Apple Store to run diagnostics and they said, everything seems to be working fine.

I had the same problem on my  iPad 3 wifi + 4G LTE model.   I  tried everything in this thread but the problem remained.  So I decided to return it and downgrade to an iPad 3 Wifi only model.

Now my standby battery problems are gone.   For the past week, my entire over night drop is only 0-1% now.     vs 1% per hour as before.

I have no solid conclusion on what the root of the problem is, but I'm a happy camper now.

I am also having this same issue, I exchanged the first iPad for a new one..... This on is exactly the same... I get maybe 6 hours of use, 2 hours if I'm streaming. Should I exchange it again???

I followed the steps suggested by eph411 and set it up as a new iPad. It worked for a couple of days, but now the problem is back again. However, I'm wondering whether this is a 4G issue. Is there anyone with a WiFi only model that is experiencing the standby drain?

Thanks for the info. Before I perform the procedure I want to check something with you. I'm experiencing fast battery drain on both my iPhone and iPad. So far I never restored a back up from either iCloud or iTunes. I wonder whether going through this whole procedure will make sense as I only used iCloud and iTunes to make a back up... Not to reinstall it as I never needed this so far. So how would a corrupt file be transferred to my devices... Thru an update of an app perhaps? Just wanted to have your idea before moving forward. Thanks.
