What you're seeing is your computer seeing the camera part of the iPod and thinking its a digital camera. There is no protocol to transfer files to and from the device without iTunes. There are some apps that say they can make the iPod into a USB drive but I've never used any of them. so up to you to read the reviews and decide. Even if they do work as a usb drive, you won't be able to sync music or anything.

The easiest thing for you to do is to just download iTunes (its free) and use it.

Seeing as though you have the latest generation iPod touch, your computer will automatically recognize the device as a camera, due to it's built-in camera drivers, as well as the pictures found on the device it's self. To use the iPod as an actual storage device would require an application. However, this solution will require iTunes as well; so my best recommendation for you is to simply get iTunes
