why is Swype unavailable on iPads

I have been using Swype on an Android phone for quite some time and simply find it amazing. I am considering buying an iPad 3 and also my phone contract is up in a couple of months so am wondering about an iPhone BUT I hate typing on a touch screen. Swype is truly amazing and it's unavailability on Apple products is holding me back fom purchasing. So come on Apple, do what ever is required to allow those lovely people who produce Swype to port to Apple products.

I notice in the App Store there are a few products pretending to be Swype which seem to be scams.

I'm sure you intend to be helpful, but generally, telling someone that something they don't want is good, and something they want isn't important, doesn't really help.

The fact is, I type a heck of a lot faster and more reliably than I speak, and I would LOVE to have a usable text input option for the iPad. Dictation ain't it. I mostly put up with a bluetooth keyboard, but I would be a lot happier if Apple would just swallow their pride and license a good technology now and then.

Apple does not bundle 3rd party apps into iOS. All of the apps they include are ones they created themselves. So, if Nuance would license swype to Apple, and Apple could create their own version, THEN it could probably be included. For example, Google owns YouTube, and when there was a YouTube app included with the iPhone, it was a version that was created by Apple. Same with Google Maps. When Google Maps was included on the iPhone, it was a version that Apple had created.

I doubt Nuance is going to license to Apple, so I doubt we will see Swype on iOS. So, in essence, it is Nuances fault that Swype is not available on iOS.

Apple controls all aspects of iOS, which is why iOS is far more stable than Android.

Apple is NOT here!

There are only other users just like yourself who are unable to do anything about Swype.

If you wish to let Apple know about this use http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

IMHO I think Swype does NOT work on the iPad becasue it can't meeting the reqrirements of iOS and nothing more. So your chances of see it on one is about as good as a snowball in you know where.

Kudos for not saying, "If Jobs were alive....". 😉

I wouldn't quite have phrased it that way but I think you grasp his apparent mentality better than many people posting here. Realistically, I don't think the company is going to stray from that in the near future. But, submit your feedback and hope for the best.

I don't think so. If one of the guidelines is "no app is ever permitted to replace the keyboard or affect the way other apps take input", then it's not a question of able-or-willing in the sense that if Nuance were better or friendlier they could; it's that Apple has defined that category of apps out of existence.

Which makes some sense, but I wish Apple would give people the option.

I think that the reality is that we as users of Apple products Should have access to Swype as we know it works well.. Android devices will find a way to incorporate this innovation.

Why isn't Apple trying harder to make this App available.. If they know their users are so passionate about it?

I know I would like the option... Even if people think they can offer their humble opinion on the apps functionality..

I'm sure it may be, but it's not practical for MOST people to be "talking" to their phones & iPads in order to send an email or text message. Especially when they're in public. I'm a big grammar snob, too, so I'd probably spend most of my time trying to correct the typos generated by dictation. 🙂

As opposed to the typos created by typing of any kind, including Swype? You'd be surprised at how well it works. And, since Swype is not an option, why not give it a try?

I have a PC laptop, a Droid RAZR Maxx phone, and i just got an IPad 4 (please know I had tried typing small I several times but it keeps overriding it, even saying iPad). I'm going to keep the iPad, I think, because what i like so far has outweighed the dislikes.

But swype is awesome! Especially for quick responses, and one handed typing. Sometimes with the iPad, I feel like I'm back in the Handheld Stone Age holding it w one hand and poking away w my index finger. Swype, meanwhile, especially the latest version, allows a seamless transition between swiping and traditional typing regardless of App.

Apple should really do something about it. That one comment about how it's nuances' "fault" is, no offense, off track. I am pretty sure that Nuance, like all companies, Likes money. I think Apple just doesn't want to admit swype is a superior experience in some user situations, to the detriment of their highly loyal users/followers/rabid cultists, etc.

Similarly, the comment that Apple's security is SO good, and that's why is also off base. Swype is resident and poses as much of a security risk as hitting the Cap key in regular use.

What I've noticed is that Apple people have become like a political party, and won't countenance any thoughts that question the way Apple works. (Which is not how Steve jobs was, coincidentally.)

I've evolved to become intensely politically independent. Partly this is because to me, most followers of either political spends all their time denigrating the other party, and zero time focusing on their own party's flaws. To me, it's like trying to stop a crime wave (e.g. Massive debt, etc.) by just focusing on half the criminals.

UNLIKE political parties, however, Apple is an amazing company, and so are many other technology companies. Everyone gets Apples controlled, closed source thing, however, there are ways to make the experience better, and Swype is probably the most basic offering. Plus from a business standpoint, I think it can make them truly crush th

@ A Frank Lender - I do not think saying it is Nuances fault is off base. Apple is very strict in what goes on within iOS. I would find it safe to say that Apples restrictions are too strict for Nuance. Of course I'm speculating here, we all are. It may be just that Apple doesn't want Swype on the iPhone. But we don't know, so we're forming opinions here. My opinion is that Nuance probably does not want to meet the restrictions Apple places on such things, so they aren't licensing it to Apple for use in the iPhone.

Second, I didn't say that "Apple's security is SO good." I said "Apple controls all aspects of iOS, which is why iOS is far more stable than Android." Meaning they don't just let anybody and their mother throw things into iOS, so the platform as a whole is more stable.

I was not making any comments about the security of iOS.
