Iphone 3g freezing on slide to unlock screen

Since yesterday all the sudden my iphone 3gs is freezing at the slide to unlock screen. You can slide it over and then after a few minutes the phone will go to the circle with the lines on it screen then all the sudden stop doing anything. If I hold the top button and home button down I can hard reboot the phone and it works again until I have to slide to unlock then it happens again. The weird thing about this is that it only seems to be happening when the phone is not on a wifi network only 3g. What can I do about this? I have the latest iOS update installed and it's been installed for a while.

iPhone 3GS, iOS 5.1

Same problem is occuring here.

  1. When powered on and slid to unlock phone will work fine (if the phone is not unlocked immediately and the screen is allowed to turn off before unlocking, step 2 happens immediately).
  2. If the phone is allowed to lock itself and I try to unlock it will "freeze" with the slider all the way to the right.
  3. It remains at this screen for around 2 minutes until the screen goes black and the loader image displays in the middle of the screen (the same display as if you switch the phone entirely off by holding down the power button)
  4. The phone remains here for around 30 - 60 seconds and then will reboot.
  5. Go back to number 1.

Any help on this would be appreciated.
