I don't think it really matters. This is just what the Operating System reads. What really counts is whether the EXIF data in the camera is correct. Import some images and click the little "i" info button and make sure that your camera's name shows up in that data.
This is all iPhoto really cares about.
I get that and it shows up on the photos. Why can't I name the camera like I can name my devices, such as Bob's iPhone, Bob's iPod Nano, Bob's iPod Shuffle, Bob's My wife's iPhone, My wife's iPod Nano? Maybe I am too "anal" but I like to know what is plugged into my computer.
Try this...
In a Finder Window... Click on 'NO NAME 1" ... Tap Return... Type in the Name you want to use...
You can rename your camera as well. I found the camera in the Finder menu. Right clicked it and choose "get info" and then in the "Name and Extension" box, wrote "Bob's Sony"....and it worked.
I didn't see your answer but it looks like you have the same solution as I found. Thanks.
You're Welcome...
However what you did was rename the memory card not the camera - if you use a different memory card that name will no longer be there - iPhoto does not know about cameras - only FAT formatted storage devices

You are right. It doesn't know. In fact this time when I plugged it in with a different memory card it comes up with three names in the Finder. It is funny that my old camera came up as Bob's Canon. I used several different memory cards with it. I must not have been paying close attention. Now I suppose I will have to name the memory cards. Thanks.
