i upgraded and shouldn't have. battery life *****. i want to go back to 3g. can i downgrade back to 3g or turn off the 4g for 3g somehow? i don't see how to? or could i uninstall ios5 for the previous version? i have a 4s.

It is 3G. The iPhones do NOT run on 4G. And I'm sorry you cannot downgrade the iOS.
You cannot downgrade. FYI, if you are experiencing battery issues, it is not due to 3G/4G speeds. 4G on the iPhone 4S is HSPA+, but the 4S has ALWAYS been HSPA+ capable, there is nothing new in the upgrade in that aspect. It's the same speeds. It's just called 4G now.

It's basically because AT&T decided to call their HSPA+ network 4G rather than 3G. Some say it's a marketing strategy of theirs. The only Apple device capable of true 4G is the iPad 3rd generation, which can attain LTE 4G speeds. As for the iPhone, AT&T just changed the name. The Verizon model or Sprint still say 3G.
Umm, stevejobsfan already answered that. 4G is the same as 3G on the 4S. There is no difference. It's simply marketing...
HSPA+ is a technical term for 3G. Don't worry about the 4G symbol. It is just a marketing ploy by AT&T. You're still running on the same network you were running before you updated your phone. The only thing you can do is turn "4G" off in the settings and go back to EDGE. But your data speeds will be terrible if you go back to EDGE.

LTE stands for Long Term Evolution. It's the next generation cell network. Your iPhone 4S can go up to 14.4 Mbps while LTE cn reach speeds up to 74Mbps. The new iPad runs on the LTE network. While a lot of carriers want you to believe that LTE is 4G, it is not. LTE Advanced is true 4G but it is not deployed yet.
Long Term Evolution, which is 4G and currently used by Verizon and AT&T and will later be used by Sprint and T-Mobile. While the version currently being introduced did not meet original drafts of 4G standards (which originally called for 100mbps download speeds) the standards were modified and LTE (and as an offshoot, HSPA+) qualified as 4G.
The iPhone 4s is not compatible with LTE but the new iPad has models that are LTE compatible.
