Apr 9, 2012 1:11 AM in response to SoundForSoundby at74,I don't know, but since I've opened the 3 ports I mentioned in my linked post above, I have never had any home sharing issues anymore (ATV3 with iTunes on Win7 64bit) and in the meantime I have watched several 2+ hours movies. I still don't know whether or not one needs to open all 3 or only one of those ports (not tested yet), anyway. No one has responded to my post, i.e. I assume only Mac users are affected.

I think you are just a Lucky ;-)
doesn't work for me. I'm using both win7 and os-x .. originally to ensure that at least one iTunes will work properly... but this time I just make the mistake and updated both at once to the same new iTunes version ....
I tried every single hint I could found here .. nothing works for a long periode..maximum was just 1 day ...
... I'm sure now, that this purely a software bug at iTunes itself ... so Apple has to fix it

I have returned one gen 3 and on my second one and still having the issure of home share dropping within 3 minutes of hook up.... I have never had any issues with any of the other ones. I am suprised at Apple not addressing the issue

Apr 20, 2012 1:11 PM in response to maybeinoregonby scubanut,I am having the same issue. ATV3 Homesharing drops. Sometimes after 3 minutes other times after 10 mins and sometimes I even get to an hour before it drops but it always drops. It happens both while I'm accessing (streaming) a movie from my imac as well as watching from the cloud. Any solutions?

Apr 21, 2012 12:53 AM in response to scubanutby Tweety_germany,Hi, I do not think that this is an network issue
- there are other streams around here focusing on this and in at least two of them the same problem accours with fixed lines (normal Ethernet)
- I once have a total lost of home sharing and run the network test build in in the ATV. that stated " no problems"
so I'm very convinced that this has nothing to do with networks ... there might be sideeffects of poor WiFi connections, but this is not the "root cause"
- I also have both platforms for iTunes (Mac OS and Windows 7) both platforms have the same isues ... so it is not an operating system problem
- I sometimes look streamed videos on an ipad with home Sharing ... ando also there are the problems... not so obvious as on the ATV but also very often...
.. so my conclusion is simply that this is an iTunes problem ..... and I'm still blame myself several times a day that I updated (for the very first time) both platforms (mac and Win) at the same time
nice weekend

Apr 22, 2012 1:23 AM in response to SoundForSoundby maximb,I can second that about Remote.app.
I have both ATV2 and ATV3. All sharing/streaming is done via Ethernet. iTunes I share from is an SL (10.6.8, up2date). Now, ATV2 had no issues with dropping Home Sharing nor any issues with Remote.app.
However, ATV3 I recently bought, unable to find iTunes from SL until I restart iTunes and Remote.app just not sees it upon start-up. ATV3 is just not there!
Edit:
ATV2 vs. ATV3 is just plain hardware difference/issue. On my side everything is up2date, so both ATV2 and ATV3 have the same iOS and they stream/access media from the same iTunes version.
My guess is that network card on ATV3 is a bit glitchy.

Apr 22, 2012 3:06 AM in response to maximbby ginginca,Given that the ATV is within the 90 days of phone support have you tried calling for telephone assistance?
-
Apr 22, 2012 12:45 PM in response to gingincaby maximb,Support will probably give me nothing.
Apple have limited options here:
1. Replace ALL buggy ATV3-devices for all customers
2. If it is a hardware issue they have to a) flash the hardware with a new firmware b) solve this within software, eg. work around for hardware bug
3. If it is a software issue - release a new update to iOS.
Support is just a gatekeeper for upset customers. I don't need a gatekeeper, I need a solution I can put on my ATV3.
Edit:
For now I just don't let ATV3 go to hibernate mode (Sleep mode).

May 14, 2012 2:31 PM in response to maybeinoregonby Jeff4Jeff,I had to switch to an ethernet cable, wifi dropped constantly. A friend bought a new model and has the exact same issue. It didn't have to do with hibernate or sleep though. We use them to stream a slide show for information boards. On wifi it worked for a few minutes to an hour or two before stopping. Sometimes we could just restart the slideshow, other times we had to power it off and back on because it no longer saw the homeshare computer. Direct cable was the only fix.

May 14, 2012 3:50 PM in response to maybeinoregonby shelder,Okay We all know it is a OS problem but here is the latest for me..... I have always had my Apple TV hard wired. I have owned Apple TV since they were first introduced and when I bought the 3rd generation, thats when the problems started. I tried it wired and wireless and still would drop sharring.... I recently bought a airport extreme ( by far the best AP I have ever had) and thought I would try wireless on it...... WELL guess what... works like a champ! Come Apple fix the problem so I can once again brag about what I can do with I tunes & Apple TV!

May 14, 2012 6:02 PM in response to maybeinoregonby Marty Frasu,Include me in the folks who have home sharing dissappear.
It happens when they go to sleep.
Next time I go to watch ATV, It can't find the shared iTunes library on my iMac.
I quit and re-start itunes. or turn the airport off and back on again.
I have had Apple TVs since Ver1 and never had these kind of problems.
I had hoped the new firmware version would solve it.
For the record I have the latest version of iTunes, and the latest firmware for the ATV 2 & 3.

May 20, 2012 2:26 AM in response to Marty Frasuby Tweety_germany,Hello All,
Well since the last Apple updates (Mac-OS, iPad (5.1.1), ATV (5.0.1 [4224])) - and I think the plural is important here - it worked fine for me.. during the last two weeks my family looked dozends of hours of Videos and TV shows without any problem.
So the last updates solved it all for me...
BUT: I keep the "old" tries to fix the problem also, so I still
- have fix IP adresses for the ATV
- have switched off IP V6
- have switched off dolby surround
don't know if this is nesseccary but just don't want to put any risk in here ;-))
And as everybody can see on the eviroment list (see below), we have a very complex landscape, most wireless. I'm very sure, that this issue was not a network issue or something else outside the Apple products. The above mentioned updates came out all together. I think they found something and had to fix it it in all devices. Probably not a big thing, but it they had to fix it ... and luckily they did ;-)
Our family enviroment contains the following Apple products:
- iTunes on a Win7 32 bit Noname PC (all content)
- second iTunes on a iMac with OS 10.6.8 (all content)
- third iTunes on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8 (daughter, only selected content)
- fourth iTunes on a Win7 32 Samsung Notebook (son, only selected content)
- all iTunes sharing the same Home Sharing ID
- 2 Apple TV second generation
- 1 Apple TV first generation
- 2 iPod touch (bought last year)
- 2 iPads (second generation)
The ATV, ipods, iPads and the Notebooks are connected wireless
- 1 Airport extrem
- 2 Airport Express (in WiFi repeater mode)
except the old ATV first generation. This device is connected with a pair of Powerline adapters
the IMac, the win7 machine and the printer are connected by a gigabit Ethernet switch - this also connects the Airport Extreme.
OK that all for me... good luck to everybody....

Jun 1, 2012 11:32 AM in response to maximbby maximb,Seem to be that I was to hasty to reply that issue was fixed. I still have it.
I contacted Swedish Support and got one (Senior AppleCare Advisor) to "catch me".
Completely technically incompetent. He asked me to reset/restart my OpenBSD router, then in my case all traffic was passed within AirPort Extreme.....I'll not go into detail, but problem is still there.
My ATV2 works as expected both with current Remote.app and my network setup, yet ATV3 does not.
I have pinpointed my debugging -> ATV3 seems to be unable to fully wake up on the first WOL packet(technical ppl whould know what I talk about). I had to send another WOL-pkt to have a complete wake up on ATV3(You can download macports and install wol from it: port install wol). This is a "child sickness" eg. bug introduced within new line of products. Apple Support seems to have trouble to addmit that.
P.S.
This "wake up"-bug is known from those old days with Linux, then latops were unable to wake up properly.
