how can I read (install font?) a document with the ethiopian language Tigrinja?

I need to work with a document translated into Tigrinja, the Ethiopian languag. I need to copy sentences from this document and put them into a web portal with different translations. How ever, I can not se the letters, there are only a sequence of unfilld boxes. How can I get my power book to understand the language?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Yes, if the font follows internationally accepted Unicode standards, as soon as it is installed on the Mac, any text containing its characters will display properly. As for the webpage, be sure to configure its HTTP header so it correctly declares the encoding and codepage to use.

For testing and exploring the full Unicode table and how your fonts interact, you may like to get the Unicode Checker utility. See here: http://earthlingsoft.net/UnicodeChecker/

Because the fonts used on your system lack glyphs (visual representations) for the respective characters. You need to get a suitable font.

I found a web page

It's fine if Ethiopia Jiret works for you, but I suggest also having a look at Abyssinica SIL

I believe it has a more extensive glyph repertoire, and an Ethiopic keyboard layout is also available on the same page (not necessary if you don't plan to type extensively in Tigrinya). You may also find useful the information and links provided here

Do you need other people to be able to see the Tigrinja on your web page? If so, you may have to ask them to download the special font or use a graphic or use some form of font embedding.

However OS X 10.7 now includes a font for Ethiopic, Kefa, so users who have upgraded to that should have no problem. I don't know about Windows users.
