Q: The new iPad has unstable 3G connection

3G icon is visible and signal is strong but safari tells no connection (other programs don't have connection as well). Switching to airplane mode and back doesnt help and reset (off and on) always helps, but problem appears again after some period. I can't tell exactly how much time should I wait but I noted that it appears after long idle period.

Ups, sorry, I should have read it before asking...:)

But all in all, its strange that so many have this problem... Some of them are lucky and either a replacement or the update 5.1.1. Could solve this problem... Mine is even caused by the update, I think..

Maybe  you should try reset all settings on new firmware. Or even try every offered possible solution that didn't work for previous firmware - who knows, maybe some of them will work on new firmware...

I think everyone with the original problem has reset network settings many times already, so maybe it would help in this case too.

Hi. I'm from Singapore and the new firmware seems to have solved the 3G issue. However as others mentioned, surfing speed is drastically reduced, even over wifi. One other key point is battery drain is also much higher, not sure if others are experiencing this as well.

For me a full restore to 5.1.1 of my DLXH device with itunes seems to solve the problem for one week.

When I bought the New iPad, it was restored with the backup of my iPad 2, so this time I configured it as a new device and install each app via App Store to have a good new device and it's very good.

The New iPad works good switchin between wifi - 2G and 3G perfectly.

I got the same problem in Singapore initially then another problem surfaced. My brother's ipad 2 only show E for the whole weeks while my Ipad 3rd Gen shows 3G from the same ISP! Then a few days later my Ipad turn to get only E, but i manage to get the 3G back, you guys might want to try this.

Turn off the Auto from the Cellular Data and select manually....for mine it change from E to 3G immediately :)

I have the same problem from switching on from 3G to WIFI and back but on my iphone 4 not iPad.

What I did was I switched off my WIFI and turned on my 3G(that isn't working at the time) and switched off my phone. So when I turn on my phone the 3G network was working. Then without turning off my 3G I connected to the WIFI which dominates the 3G. I checked if the WIFI was working which it did, then next I went back to turn it off and see if the 3G was working.

Next I turned off the the 3G to see if WIFI was working, again it did. After a second attempt of seeing if it worked and it did.

    Try:

    1. turn off phone with WIFI off and 3G on

2.Turn it back on and see if 3G works

    3. Without turning 3G off connect to WIFI. See if WIFI works (if yes continue to 4)

4.Then turn off 3G and see if WIFI still works

    5. If WIFI still works try turning it off

6.Turn 3G on and see if it works.

That's bascially what I did and I tried turning 3G and WIFI on and off to see if the method worked and it did for me and I hope it helps.

With iOS 6 the problem is back on my new iPad. It was definitely better with the latest version of iOS 5, but now my iPad looses 3G connection once or twice a day. Very annoying.

    Anyone else seeing this issue?

    Yep,

Don't know if it's iOS 6 or what, but having trouble keeping up the 3g connection. I use my iPad to tether connection to my mac at home also so it's very annoying when the net stops working. Sometimes it gets back up just with waiting, but usually I just restart the iPad. Happens to me few times a day.

Hasn't Apple said anything about this problem to date? Hope they'll release a ios soon.

xfly, I have had the same problem since I bought the new iPad back in March here in Sweden. I have exchanged it twice via Apple support and got a new one each time but the problem persists. I have tried the following:

    - Tried iOS 5.1, 5.1.1 and 6.0

    - Reinstall via iTunes and set up as new

    - Reset network settings

    - Exchanged the SIM card to one with another batch number/version

    - Switched to my work SIM with totally different set of services on it

    - Used a SIM/subscription from another operator

    - Tried different APNs (while troubleshooting with my operator)

    - Tried on several different locations, both roaming and local

    - My operator confirmed that when one of these drop-outs happened, when the network tried to contact the iPad it did not respond. A while later, the iPad responded from another cell. No correct handover had been made.

The problem does not arise when having only Edge (2G) coverage.

To me it seems that the problem is the 3G handovers. No new iPad will fix that as long as they use the same cellular chip. Hopefully (for Apple) it can be fixed with a modem firmware upgrade since I will be returning mine over and over again until it works.
